Cricket stripped bare
By ellipinnock

Usual caveat with me and comedy...I apologise if it ent funny! But I thought I'd lend a hand and fill some space :) (You know things are bad when I venture into the realms of comedy)

Breaking news this week from Australian researchers indicates that left-handed people think more quickly than right-handed people when playing sport. This has led to the discovery that Australia's recent dominance of the international cricket scene is due to the fact that Adam Gilchrist was successfully cloned a number of years ago. The clones have apparently been well-treated, given extensive plastic surgery and are often to be seen propping up their batting line up. This does explain why Gilchirst has been in such poor form of late and why he is so hideously ugly; his stem cell count is thought to be terminally low. A new website has been set up on his behalf, for every hundred clicks one pound will be donated towards the surgery that he so desperately needs so get voting. You can also text Save Gilchrist's face to 88111 - lines close at midnight. The results show will be broadcast at 6pm, Saturday on BBC1 followed by I'm a cricketer get me out of here at 7pm.

The recent overturning of a cloning ban in Australia is widely expected to pave the way for new clones of Shane Warne to be rolled out worldwide in the New Year. This may also help to bolster the Australian economy as several countries are known to have put in orders for new bowling machines. We asked Duncan Fletcher for his reaction to this news (this transcript has been highly edited as our reporter struggled to interpret the mumbles emanating from Mr Fletcher's chin):

'Well that's a crap idea. Can you imagine a team cloned from Strauss and Trescothick? It would cost the taxpayer thousands of pounds in early return flights for a start and we still wouldn't score any runs. Instead, we have come up with a new, innovative strategy. Rather than wasting time and money developing our own talent we are going to buy a Shane Warne Mark 2 in the Spring. We have been reliably informed by Mystic Meg that Warne Mark 2 will be mauled by a large Alsatian around April time. We are currently persuading Ashley Giles to offer his face for transplantation purposes after this unfortunate event. Bingo, problem solved.'

When Fletcher was asked whether England have any other plans to tackle a resurgent Australia, he gave us this exclusive scoop,

'Following the classification of striptease as art by the Norwegian government we have obtained a lottery grant to enable Monty Panesar to attend a course. We all know I'm never going to play a spin bowler who actually takes wickets so he might as well make himself useful. The sight of him stripping in the stands should put the Aussies right off their strokes with the added benefit of making him a prime contender for Sports Personality of the Year.'

Wow. Most girls I know would drop down asleep at my feet if I mentioned the cricket but you have to know your stuff to do satire and you've managed it admirably here.

People can either laugh or cry at the state of English cricket and hopefully with items like this it'll be the former.

A good read. :)
Sssshhhhh...

It's my guilty secret I'm afraid...I generally keep it under control but every so often the pills fail...

Thanks LJ

... I feel that for me to comment would be gilding the lily

If striptease is the answer I think that the sales of sunscreen will rise sharply .

Maybe the coloured kind could be used as a warpaint to enliven the lads and raise the endorphin level .

Well written Elli

And , LJ , if the girls drop down asleep at your feet at the mention of cricket , maybe you have discovered reverse seduction ?

Streaking...?

Well, well well, Miss Elli. I scarpered over here on the pretexted of it saying something about you being ......... ' stripped bare'? Sadly it seems the reference was to cricket. About which what I know nothing. Though at least, palpably, I have something in common with the English National Cricket team.

You are wasted here Miss Ellie. They need you in Australia. Striped bare or otherwise. Leastways, one presumes, you would rouse a round of applause from the male Australian cricket fans. Which is more than can be said for the English Cricket team.

Quasi funny. But needs a ripping gag. I think you are a better short script writer. Made me smile though for having th balls to kick a man when he is down. And that is not meant to patronise.

Slan!
Thankyou Gerard...

Get your mind out of the gutter young man, I certainly don't strip for free!

I will gladly settle for quasi funny...I find that the best time to kick a man is when he's lying on the floor, has more impact that way :)

Cheers,

Elli

I thoroughly enjoyed this, although wasn't sure when you mentioned cricket that I would. But even though I know nothing much about what your story was about, it was well written and funny.

There were 21 middle aged men and women cheering your poetry (Ode to Scotsman and reply) yesterday, and the young teacher said to tell my friend that it was much appreciated. And then I asked the poetry group to discuss your Cinderella poem which they will do next Wednesday so I can give you a report on their comments after that.

Thanks for reading my Anna and Rosie.
Loved this...

especially the asides such as "I'm a cricketer get me out of here!" :)

I think we need to see more from you in the comedy forum!

Very competent Elli, a job well delivered. You often remind me of BottleBilboBaggins stye of writing when it comes to humour.

That's a compliment to you both.

Thanks

Glad you liked it even though it was 'about' cricket!

Also glad the Scottish malarky went down well and they didn't throw you out! I hope they like Cinderella (it has been accepted for publication in a small poetry mag in March)

Cheers

Glad you liked it, I think it's probably a good thing that my visits to comedy are infrequent tbh but given the content I thought I'd come and play with the boys (and BBS) for a wee while :)

Last time I saw a cricket match, David Gower was making his debut and the only way the England bowling attack could get rid of Rick McCosker was by breaking his jaw (with the ball, I think). Does Dickie Bird still come on with oranges at half-time? I did, however, understand the allusion to striptease in Norway, it's amazing what you can get down the bars in Oslo if you lubricate the odd palm with a few old kroners. Like the proverbial bouncer, what didn't go over my head, I enjoyed. Cheers, Elli.

Well done Elli. You must drop by here more often! My brother-in-law is an avid England cricket fan. Couple this with the fact that he hates Christmas and you can see why I am not looking forward to visiting him over the festive period...Again nicely done.

Well, well – now it’s out. Elli dreams about cricket. I’ve always thought to many years long looking down a microscope count sperm would result in permanent adverse results. I couldn’t have imagined that she could slip to the point of counting a stream of Shane Warnes jumping from her second story window. The text messages ringing in her ears must be quite alarming.

Not a Ricky Ponting in sight ---- Miss Elli, Miss Elli what can I say? Perhaps ‘you are batting for the wrong team.’ (I guess I’m not helping). ---- regards, wattle

PS: almost forgot – I like – thank you.

I now feel competent to comment on this after a short course on cricket by Mike. A really very funny piece of work Elli and good to see another lady in the comedy forum. I loved the bit about cloning, great concept and you obviously know your stuff. I'mm sure if I knew the names better it would be even funnier but I definitely got teh gist of it.

..."I find that the best time to kick a man is when he's lying on the floor, has more impact that way"

My admiration for your good sense and judgement just grows (and of course there are so many more soft targets available at foot height)
Hope to see more, don't be a stranger here
cheers

You definitely get more reviews this way than down in poetry! If you're not careful you might get what you wish for...

'you obviously know your stuff' - plus a little bit of bullshit and the wonderful power of google :)

I thought you'd approve of kicking a man when he's down, seems eminently sensible to me!

Cheers,

Elli

Nothing to add to the other reviews except to say I enjoyed this.
