In a Eucalyptus Grove
By Witzl
10 December 2006
A memory of my childhood.

In a Eucalyptus Grove

My hand in his, we make our way

through slender trunks so smooth and slick,

beneath a grey-green canopy

the crunch and spice of seed pods underfoot;

He shows me where the bark has left

oval patchworks, beige and cream

We pick up leaves to crush and shred

(He frowns and proffers Latin names

I listen to with half an ear)

The sweet sap fills

our noses, and it scents the air;

The rain falls lightly, coating leaves

is caught by fragrant canopy

and hardly falls on us.

I think this is one of your best poems Witzl. It has a really good pulse, metre, cadence. (still not learned the right word) Whatever it is, it lends your piece a very gentle 'atmosphere' that suits your words. Loved it.

Just one very small gripe. Last two lines didn't quite have the same rhythm (etc) of the rest. They sounded 'out of tune.' I hope this makes sense to you.

Anyway, super stuff.

All the best, Phil.

Yep, I agree with Phil - it has such a good pulse to it.
I really liked this.

Best wishes,

This is lovely, and I can almost smell the Eucalyptus while I read it.

Just a lovely evocative, nostalgic little poem. First class!
