I wish I felt like a milkshake.
Sweet and frothy
and just a little retro.
I would stroll out of MacDonalds,
burger in hand,
bony hips wriggling in low-cut skinny jeans,
exchanging fake air kisses with sleekly groomed darlings.
The kind of girl who makes builders whistle
and spotty teenage boys blush,
changing her clothes as often as her make-up
and slipping out of both with equal ease.
Time to leave,
I crush the half-empty can of Mountain Dew in my hand,
its saccharine glow hiding an acid kick
almost as sharp as the tongue
that flicks from between my bitten lips.
The type of girl whom spotty teenage boys
confide in, who can walk past building sites
in comfortable anonymity
and will not shed her clothes
even in front of the mirror.
Falling out of pyjamas and into spray-on jeans,
climbing onto heels and applying 'Milkshake Girl'
with painstaking care
I saunter out onto the street.

This is lovely, Elli. I like the contrast between the girls who make spotty teenage boys blush and the girls those boys confide in. Say what you will about Milkshake Girls, they generally are a little short of character. Having said that, I wouldn't mind being a Milkshake Girl with character myself. . . |

I'm not sure I understand this one. Is milkshake girl a kind of makeup? If I were describing a milkshake I would say it was thick and rich - your straw can support itself - but then I suppose mine would be an ice-cream milkshake - maybe not the same thing. I like the description of the Mountain Dew. Actually I like the whole thing, I just wish I could understand it. |

I wouldn't mind being a milkshake girl with character myself! Jean- 'Milkshake girl' as a phrase does remind me of teen make-up! But I was trying to get at the idea that the girl is applying the personality of 'milkshake girl' (the frothy, milky kind of milkshake...) because she feels that girl is more 'attractive' than 'mountain dew' girl. Hopefully we then come to the gulf between self image and the way we appear to others...perhaps. Mind you, 'milkshake girl' probably is thick and rich Elli |

When I read the words 'milkshake girl,' I pictured a girl who could drink milkshakes -- rich and tasty -- and still manage to look perfect. Who could eat without gaining an ounce. A mountain dew girl, on the other hand, struck me as a girl who would drink diet sodas not out of preference, but in a vain effort to keep her weight down. I might be wrong, but this is the interpretation I came up with here. But I did mess up on 'naked fingers fretting,' so I could well be wrong! |

most people have their own milkshake girl if you see what I mean so feel free to interpret her any way you like - for me in this instance they are the same person but milkshake girl knows she's skinny, mountain dew girl on the other hand is not so sure...but it's not supposed to be rigid. Elli |

I like this, especially the contrasts. I went out with a 'milkshake girl' once (God knows how, I was hardly Bratt Pitt) and she was thick and rich - and a complete bitch to boot. All the best, Phil. |

I liked this very much - loved the idea of using a milkshake vs mountain dew to label the two different characters. One of my friends is a typical milkshake girl. When she walks down the street you can almost hear the Pretty Woman soundtrack playing, hehe. E |

| Elli, you are the maker of masterpieces --- I like (very much). OK so now I’m seeing light bright in my poetry, only took one day. What a clever Elli. ---- I’ve never been one for milkshakes give me mountain dew any day. ---- thank you – regards, wattle (OK you can have your 200 runs) |

Really enjoyed this poem Elli...brought back a few memories of me as a gawky "mountain dew" teen (not sure things have changed much since then but hey, milkshake girls have no substance...right?)

At least a crunchie McFlurry? No? What a dissy! I think this new found fame has gone to your head! Very interesting, but lacking the magic for this spotty teenage (once) boy. Oli |
