Barbie Doll

I am not a great Barbie fan. Somehow, I doubt that will surprise anybody.

I've done another Barbie poem -- one that rhymes -- but I believe I will leave that one for later.

Barbie, oh dear Barbie

With your bright blue eyes

Your pleasant, fixed cheerleader smile

Enormous breasts that float so high

Above a pert and slender waist;

Your hair a sweet confection that

is never found in disarray;

Your limbs so long and silky-smooth

And fashion sense impeccable!

Please pity me, a gawky girl,

flat-chested, hair a bushy mess;

I weep to see reflected back

my graceless face, plain-featured, dour;

My stubby feet and stick-out ears

I study with such glum dismay.

Your charm and beauty, effortless

mock my own studied, futile toil.

You beckon with your friendly smile

I know you mean well, but I fear

You cannot teach me what you know.

In dressing room, I’m prone to choose

Bright polyester, double-knit

In lurid yellows, oranges, pinks

I aim for style – but always miss.

So Barbie, please don’t take this wrong

I fear our friendship cannot last

I’d rather have a plainer pal

A stout, thickwaisted, moustached lass

Some girl like me with dumpy legs

Who lives in sweatshirts, grubby slacks

. . . and leaves me my own wardrobe space.

Poor Barbie will be feeling lonely - but I suppose she has the equally vacant Ken to keep her company.

Really liked this Witzl. Self depreciating and humorous.

All the best, Phil.
Now I understand everything!

Is it the children who were brought up alonside Barbie doll who are now trying to slim down to size 6? I understand now why, in our house, Barbie suddenly went missing, but Looby Loo, the dirty little rag doll, with her perpetual smile and two big black felt eyes and floppy limbs has lived through two generations. Every child who ever came into our home loved Looby beyond reason. Now it's my grandaughter's choice too. Looby Loo, dirty little old rag doll "We love you so much because we can ASPIRE to being like you but never to being like Barbie."

My daughters are both refusing to let Barbie near their daughters - so perhaps it will work and they won't have to feel out of proportion.

You certainly painted an interesting picture.

How nice to find other anti-Barbies out there.

I never had a Barbie. My mother refused to buy one, feeling that they encouraged girls to be vapid clotheshorses who cared only for make-up and fashion. I didn't really want one, though I could have used a role model with fashion sense.

My own daughters have not had Barbies, and to my infinite relief, have not pined for them any more than I ever did.
