Stand Up and Sing!
By Bagheera
13 December 2006
It's that time of the year, and Radio Merseyside is once again challenging wannabee songwriters to come up with an original Christmas Carol!
My "Country Carol" didn't win last year, I'm hoping for better luck this time with the following.
Written in ♪6/8♪ time [à la 'Viennese Waltz'], it has 4 bars in the first half and 5 bars in the second .... but it works!!

               Stand Up and Sing!

1.        Stand up and sing to the baby King,
           Angels above shower their love
While shepherds adore him wise men kneel before him
And so we sing: “Stand Up and Sing”

2.        Stand up and Praise! This glorious day,
Let all have their fill of joy and goodwill
The Saviour’s birth brings peace to the earth
And so we say: “Stand up and Praise”

3.        Stand up and Sign and you will find                      During this verse
God’s love you can hear, perfectly clear                 it would be preferable
Making a beautiful noise as its voice                    for someone to Sign!
Aims for the skies: “Stand Up and Sign”

4.     Stand up and “whisper” – now it is Christmas!          This verse should begin
Silent the night: stars burning bright                       as a spoken “whisper”
Proudly we join our hands in friendship and             then increase steadily
Loudly we sing: “Stand Up and Sing”                      from pp < fff at end

5.    Repeat v.1

I like the words, but I can't sing a long in my head - unlike the one last year that I could easily do. Maybe if you give us more of a clue as to the melody.

Good idea having something for the deaf to get involved in.

Watched my younger son's carol service last night. (Year 6) They signed all the way through one of their carols, really interesting - but it got me thinking as I was watching them all - there must be accents to signing as well as speech!

As a carol, reads well, but it's difficult to 'hear.' I wonder Bagheera, if you're musical, you could put an MP3 somewhere on the net for us to listen to.

All the best, Phil.

this has now been rattling around in my head for a while! liked it - particularly 'stand up and sign'. Liked the 6/8 time signature for this although the way thhe stresses are grouped made it slightly awkward for me to read out in places. great stuff
