Continuing a theme of the moment ;)
I sat cross legged looking up at Jesus; his arms were held out palms up to one side. He did not look well, his skin was shiny and his beard was matted and unkempt; he was also unsteady on his feet, beside which sat loafs of bread and a few fish. Suddenly the light was sucked from the air and darkness descended: nothing, I couldn't even see Jesus anymore. Suddenly light returned: the door opened half way and Prideesh flicked on the light switch: “What are you sitting on the floor for?”, I looked down at the box in my hand, back up at Jesus who had now reappeared and then at the good lady; “Jesus doesn't work!” “Give me that!”, she held out her hand and I reached forward and gave it to her, her lips moved as she silently read the words on the box, she then stepped into the room herself and closing the door flicked off the light switch; dark descended once more, we waited: no sign of Jesus. “Your right”, she said, handing the box back to me; “Jesus doesn't work. Do you want a cup of tea?” I nodded in the affirmative and she left me in the room. The box had promised: 'The Ultimate Jesus Action Figure”; in big luminous letters at a diagonal to the main title were the words: “With glow in the dark hands!” I felt very disappointed, but I guess, should not have been surprised. |

Short and pithy and your ending was better than Dylans. I really liked this piece. I admire people who put their heads over the parapet to make statements like this. it's just a shame that the ones who need to read it probably won't cheers J | Malfunctioning Messiah Written by Cindersarella (67 comments posted) 2nd January 2007 | I can almost feel your disappointment - glow in the dark hands that don't glow!! - unfulfilled promises, what a let down! (though glad to see a cup of tea was enough to console you!) Is there perhaps a deeper symoblic meaning to your piece? ?!! ...or simply a sage piece of advice - ultimate jesus action figures just aren't what they say on the box! A grounding piece of work that maybe reminds us all that we take ourselves too seriously at times! Thanks for making me giggle
| HI Johnny Written by jean.day (2279 comments posted) 3rd January 2007 | You so simply sum up how religion can and does let people down. You expect, and are promised, the best, and it just doesn't happen, most of the time. I seem to remember my parents having a crucifix in their room which glowed in the dark - just the Jesus bit - not the cross itself, so it really looked wierd as you went into the room. | Just in case Written by johniebg (538 comments posted) 3rd January 2007 | ... anyone was wondering why this is in non-fiction: I did get a Ultimate Jesus Action Figure as a present on or about the 25 December last year; from somebody obviously who know me very well and with an excellent sense of humour. It came with loafs of bread, fish and an urn - for water I presume. It professed that Jesus' hands would light up in the dark but they didn't, even when I locked myself in the box cupboard with him. This story sort of happened, but as with all stories about Jesus, I have changed a few of the facts to meet the needs of the story I was trying to tell Here is to a productive 2007, have a good one. | Written by Fledermaus (3281 comments posted) 4th January 2007 | Considering your other work I guess there's some metaphor behind it like the one Jean mentions, but... It's so much funnier if one takes this literally, without any deep thoughts |
