Tick tock
By JourneyAtNight
12 January 2007
I'm disgustingly lazy with titles.

It's exam time again, oh joy.  I would be fine if it weren't for the tiny little factor of time.

Time
A big white circle with black turning hands.
Plastic
Not a laugh, or a song,
No whisper of inspiration.
But still, there she is, watching our every move
Why should we have to abide by her cold monotonous rules?
Every tick followed by tock
Like a prodding finger on my shoulder
Nagging
It doesn’t matter how hard I try,
It’s never good enough.

When I look away
I swear she plays tricks on me.
Just to be cruel.
How can half an hour go by in five minutes?
It’s impossible
She knows that better than anyone.
She does it on purpose, I know it.
But as soon as I look around again
She returns to her ticking and her tocking.
Just as before.

It’s ten to two already.
She just smirks at me
Smug, knowing that she beat me again.

Ah yes, the old chestnut.

I had a debate on here recently about time - does it actually exist? We know that it is "relative" because of that wee fellow Albert Einstein, I argue that time is just a human concept, i.e. animals have either no concept of it, or a radically different one. You are right that our perception of the passing of "time" changes with circumstances, or is it actually time that changes?

Good luck with the zams, try not to make an Esra of them!

I was so glad when my finals were finished and I knew that it would be 3 years until I had to take another which would be a viva rather than a written exam :) So I sympathise!

I thought it a bit prosy in places. I liked the last three lines very mcuh thought they made for a strong ending. Worth hacking at a bit IMO

Liked this. Yes prosy, but not in an unpoetic way. I liked the direct nature of this. Suits the simple me.

Funny, if I've ever thought of it at all, I've though of time as a him (don't know why) but the devious nature you give it, she must be female. (I'm ducking. ) In my defence, a man wouldn't have the intelligence or guile to be so full of trickery.

Time is...

On the question of time, might I ask if anyone knows how long the present is?
I mean, there must be one. We have a future and a past, so there must be a link, which is the present.
But how long is that?

Regarding the poem; very nice. I concur, a little prosy, but then again I like prose. So I like it.
