Umbrella Dreams
By ellipinnock
14 January 2007
She dreams she is small enough to stand on the damp soil
underneath the leaves of her umbrella plant
where slender arching stems are transmuted into towering trunks
that menace her slender stance.

She runs and runs but comes
only around the pot rim and back to her beginning.

A tipping can splatters the soil and she darts for shelter
beneath yellow-streaked leaves that bow and dance
under the stream of water, joyful in thanksgiving.
Pools form at her saturated feet, reflecting her grey face
framed by sagging clouds.

Where is the reality in this?
A dreamer lost in anxiety, dwarfed by her insecurities
or a coward in futile flight from problems she dare not face?
Or simpler still, a warning not to forget an umbrella
in case of sudden storms.

The second time I read this I pictured it literally in my head - absolutely wonderful. When I stopped looking for things that are/aren't there and just focused on the words, this really came alive.

I like to think it's just the umbrella. The little imp I saw was just too lovely to have insecurities - but she did look a bit pissed off when she got wet.

Afterthought...

She reminded me of the character in Johnie's Dancng to the Beat of 16 Hearts, but not so lethal.

Thanks Phil-with the right end of the stick

I too would like to think it's just a reminder not to forget her umbrella, however, I have a feeling that that was just my instinct for flippancy taking over!

Only recently read 'dancing to the beat...' - no intentional comparisons but maybe deeply rooted sunconscious is taking over! Or maybe I need to buy an umbrella as well...

Running around in plant pots will simply not do! Hope there was no baby bio in the water or you'll stink for weeks.

Love the new word "sunconscious" by the way! Superellifragilisticexpalidocious!

Oh, don't tell me it is literally just about dreaming about not forgetting to take an umbrella. I spend hours trying to work out the meaning of your poems - and that is greatest fun.

I didn't know...
