The Owl
By steamrail
15 January 2007
What inspired me to write this was poem was my love of owls. The most gracious of all the birds-of-prey is the owl. They are such beautiful birds - their ability to turn heads round and the eyes that never blink.

The Owl

Brown wings spread
Flap like flags

Owl leaves barn
Heads to tall oak
Talons grip thick branch

Short screams
Grievous shrill

Head turns
Watchful eyes search out prey

Wings capture air
Stream; skimming water
Flies obliquely

Beak grabs mouse
Carries to barn
Feed hungry owlets

Moon sinks
Sunlight glimmers
above the horizon

Snuggling with chicks
Weary lids close

This doesn't really work for me. The short staccato lines just don't flow or create a rhythm to help this along. There's nothing to really say: this is the essence of an owl. Others may feel differently.

Sorry, Phil.
