Chapter 2 Cassie Landers arrived at work 15 minutes late as usual. She flew past her secretary. “Ms. Landers, the meeting started 15 minutes ago” “Thanks Judy” Yeah, thanks for pointing out the obvious. Her secretary Judy had a knack for doing that. Like when she would go home at night, “Ms. Landers, it’s 5:00, time for me to go home.” “Great, the day we have meet with the client and I am stuck in my 15 minute tornado.” She called it her tornado because she was always caught up in it. No matter where she was going she was always late. She was sure she was born 15 minutes late, not a minute before or after. “Judy do you have the proposal?” “Right here Ms. Landers.” Cassie quickly gazed in the mirror and brushed back her hair. “Thanks. I won’t be back until after lunch so please forward my calls to my cell phone.” Detective Vanz was just wrapping up the crime scene when his cell phone rang. “The letter just arrived” “Right on time”, Vanz knew it was coming. After each murder a letter arrived addressed to Vanz as if to show his incompetence. “Better bring it up a notch or you will always stay a step behind, as usual”, the killer baited the detective. Vanz addressed the medical examiner. “Tell me you have something Sally.” “Sorry detective same lack of evidence. I can tell you he died within the last twelve hours.” “CSU is still dusting for prints and looking for some mistake, but as usual it looks like your girl left nothing.” She has to make a mistake sometime and when she does I will be there. All that was left to do is wait for the next murder and hope she makes a mistake. Luck can only last for so long. Cassie returned to from lunch and looked through her messages. She stopped cold when she saw a message from a detective Vanz. What now? He had been on her ass since the murder of an boyfriend of hers. She had enough things to worry about in her life, her job being the first. She did not need some second rate cop harassing her every time there was another murder. “Judy hold my calls for the rest of the day. I am going to work from home so call my cell in case of an emergency. Otherwise just take a message.’ When Cassie returned home Vanz was waiting for her. He was surprised at her beauty each time he saw her. Long brown hair with a touch of gold, green eyes, a body that had curves in all the right places. He had a hard time keeping his meetings with her professional. In fact, the reason he kept seeing her had nothing to do with work though he would never admit that to himself. She did not fit the little known profile of the killer, still she was his only link to the murders. “Detective Vanz can this wait? I have had a hard day and all I want to do is get into a hot bath and slip into bed.” She said just the right words to get his imagination going. “There has been another murder.” “I heard, what does that have to do with me? “Well you still have not been able to explain your whereabouts on the night your boyfriend was killed.” “I told you I was home, alone” “Your doorman says he never saw you come home that night.” “The doorman is asleep most of the time, so that is not surprising.” “Just a few questions. How about you put on a cup of coffee?” “Fine”, Cassie said irritated, “come in.”
