SEX

Yes, it really is about sex

SEX

Little Tommy loved cake so much
he'd dream, at night, of becoming a baker.
That way he could eat cake
(chocolate was his favourite)
every day.

    Little James looked forward
    to special occasions because
his mum would bake lemon sponge,
and he thought that that was a nice treat.
He dreamt of becoming a goal keeper
    for United.

(Forget the problems of class
and environmental influence)
Little Tommy,
through sheer chocolate-driven effort
opened, at nineteen,
The Little Tommy Bakery -
which was ironic,
because he gave up eating cakes,
not because he was Big Tommy now,
but because he was sick of the taste
of anything sweet.

     Little James grew up
to become (forget the problems of society
                        and random chaos)
    a prison warden
    in Manchester. He
    still looks forward
to his mum's lemon sponge -
    which is nice,
    because she still
    loves baking for him.

it grabs your attention, then tells a really sweet (!) tale, at then end you think, hang on, why SEX? so you go back and try to work it out and it's not immediately apparent...
haunting

but it's clever and cynical enough to be an intriguing confection

Hello Kev

Replace the words to do with cake with the word sex and you should get it.

Thanks for the feedback

I found this poem clever. It is well constructed and was a pleasure to read. Clever stuff. Thanks for sharing it.

This guy (Alan David Pritchard) has an unusual way of looking at life - and is very funny to boot!
