Dead Men's Shoes: Part Three

Another direction

You told me
scuffed trainers,
black leather lace-ups
and brown suede slip-ons
were all the shoes you'd ever need.

Now my heels rattle against the floor,
on empty wooden rectangles stained
with the absence of our shared possessions.
Discarded trainers on the doormat
the only remnant of you.

I wrap them gently in tissue and brown paper,
call round to deliver them
and find your new penthouse flat
full of sculpted leather soles and loafers,
lounge shoes and trendy trainers,
ankle boots, walking boots and wellies.

Time to leave you
full of the profits of stamping on the fingers
of those further down the ladder.
Peering back to calculate
the value of their shoes.

I throw yours into the river
and walk home.

Heheh... Categorizing people by the shoes they wear. I wonder what people will think of me. My shoes are usually of good quality, but I tend to take shortcuts through muddy puddles and forget to clean them well.

This ties back in with the first which ends with cleaning river mud from a pair of shoes.

Your female character gives a sad, defeated tone to this and I get the impression of an oblivious ex. He's up the greasy pole and he ain't looking back.

Enjoyed.

Phil.

I like this one too. She sure wasn't over him - wrapping his scuffed trainers gently in tissue paper.

So much of your work is about unhappy relationships. I am pleased when i read it to know that you are not currently going through all this stuff.
#1 I like best

I like them all, well written and, yes similar in theory, at least, if not theme.

I like Dead Men's Shoes #1 best I think, because in the end it seems the shoes are free to live another life. It kind of implies that life does go on no matter what else happens.

#2 is very good, but in a more fatalistic vein. It seems more about the person, or narrator, than the actual subject of shoes. Much deeper consequences come to surface.

#3, this is perhaps the more realistic of the 3. I can imagine that situation -- a better life defined in a shoe display. Yes, chucking them in the river is what a sensible person would do, no doubt.

Good series. Please revisit that topic in the future, maybe every year write a Dead Men's Shoes installment on the eve of Guy Fawkes day ;o)

I liked the image of the ex having reached his position by stamping on fingers. Neatly links to the shoe imagery.

I enjoyed reading these three takes on the title.
