Harry Allen and the C.C.
By CliffBowes
07 February 2007
I have just written this minute, based on my experiences of forty odd years ago in a 'big house' in SW London.

Harry Allen and the C.C.

The fellow sits in silent thought.
Atmosphere fraught.
No games to play,
no not today.
Three clear Sundays have quickly flown
since Black Cap’s tone
with sombre rhyme
gave little time
to feel remorse, or drop a tear.
Footsteps draw near,
he calls for Mum.
Harry has come.

Harry Allen and the CC

Dear Mary
Harry Allen was the public executioner prior to hanging being abolished in the sixties. CC refers to Capital Charge the way that prison and court staff referred to a case where guilty meant hanging. The Judge would put on a black cap when delivering the sentence of death.
Two officers would sit with the condemned man and often played cards, draughts etc with him. The sentence should be executed after three clear Sundays had elapsed.
Hope this clears up the point for you.

Thank you Cliff.
I have read the poem many times and like it more with each reading, especially now that I know the background.mary 8) 8)
