By CliffBowes
10 February 2007
This was written for a writing course as an exercise in 'Alphabet Writing' a rather stupid thing to do, but I found it a bit of a challenge. Perhaps suitable for a downmarket Gardening Magazine.

A is the aster, a Michaelmas flower,
B is the bluebell in woodland or bower.
C is the cowslip, from meadows she comes,
D is the daffodil, favourite with mums.
E is the erica, genus of heather,
F is forget-me-not, bringing Spring weather.
G the geranium, sometimes called cranesbill,
H is the honeysuckle where bees drink their fill.
I is the impatiens, busy if Lizzie,
          J is the juniper, flavours G & T fizzy.
K is the kingcup, marigold of the marsh,
L is the lilac, weathers winters so harsh.
M is the may, when it’s out cast your clout,
N is the nettle, you must pull it out.
O is the oxlip a primula delightful,
P is the prayer plant looking so rightful.
Q is the quince (see Cydonica Oblonga),
R is the rose, there’s nothing smells stronger.
S is the salix, a willow to weep,
T is the tradescantia, over beds it will creep.
U is the umbrella, plant, leaf or pine.
V is the violet, if not shrinking it’s fine.
W is the wallflower so bless’d with scent,
X is the xerophyllum, that’s money well spent.
Y is the yucca pointing to skies blue,
Z is the Zygopetalum, thats an orchid to you.

with silver bells and cockle shells and pretty maids all in a row. Yours sounds nicer Cliff.

Nice to think about all those summer delights in the midst of Winter!

Thanks

Yep, could almost feel the sun on my back as I read this.

(Mine mainly grows between a weed I can't get rid of.)

Thanks Oli, Phil & Esra for your kind comments. I owe my lovely garden to my green fingered wife, Hilary, who does it all. Roll on Summer.

I'll bet this was difficult to write! Stumbled a little in places I thought but I liked it overall - happy thoughts of a more colourful time of year.
