Anansi
By Fledermaus
12 February 2007
Anansi is a mythological figure from the West-Indies...

Little spider, born in Africa
Aboard a slaveship you arrived
In wide and wild America
The long, long voyage you survived

You lived there and saw people, oh yes
Of all colours, all religions
All kinds of song, all types of dress
You saw hawks and you saw pigeons

And there before your many eyes
You saw their history unfold
You saw their struggle, heard their cries
People, that other people sold

But when the masters left at last
They took eachother by the hand
And on a bloody painful past
They built a wealthy, happy land

Civil war could not break you
And poverty could not take you

Dear little spider
You live forever

Dear Batty,
the material was good but I cant get rid of the feeling that Fledermaus could, indeed should, have done a lot more with it
Biddy :sigh :sigh

Thanks Marybarry. You're probably right, but I couldn't find the right phrases and rhime-words... :sigh
These countries have such a fascinating history... Perhaps I'll try to write my own little Anansi-story some day in order to make up for a mediocre poem ;)

Good idea Fledermaus, but as soon as read the title and saw Anansi I couldn't get the creation story out of my head - you don't really refer to that.

All the right ingredients, just needs a little more development.

Phil.

Hi Phil.
I must admit I only remember the funny stories from the Surinamese version were he usually quarrels with Brother Tiger. I wanted to put the other animals in this poem, as it's such a nice multicultural blend of animals from all over the world (just like the population of the west Indies itself). Somehow it just seemed I couldn't find the right lines.
