Stop Talking
By rilLie
15 February 2007
a moment of frustration...

You just keep talking and talking
You don't even look my way.

You don't give a damn about
what I care for.
You wouldn't even  notice my tears.

You just nod you head
when I get a perfect grade.
My classmates get new celfones
when they get an 84.

I only want you to notice what
I could do.
I want you to really see
the real ME.

rilLie, I wish you were here so my 15-year-old and you could talk to each other! You seem to have a few things in common.

Her friends have their own computers with internet connection; they have their own TV sets in their rooms and they did not have to pay for their cell phones -- and yes, their grades are crap. And she just got the physics prize in her class against all expectation, and all the reward she got for it was £10 towards a pair of jeans. Does that make you feel any better? Maybe not, but at least you'll know that a kid in Scotland is feeling hard done by too. . .

You are probably right: often we parents do not see our kids as clearly as we should. But I do feel that your parents must be proud of you; it is just hard for them to show it all the time. And for what it is worth, congratulations for your perfect grade and I'll bet your parents have bragged about it to someone. After all, I've just bragged about my daughter's physics prize to you.

Okay -- hard question now: Do you ever notice your parents' tears? My daughter is absolutely oblivious of mine.

My goodness rilLie, where have you been? And what turned you into an angsty, belligerent teenager?

We've all been there you know, it will pass, and then you can laugh quietly when they are in their dotage and require your help to tie their shoe laces.

Oli :)

Excuse me, am I missing something here; aren't you going to ultimately benefit from all the hard work and good grades, a little more perspective and you'll feel better and we won't get this sort of stuff to read.
cheers

It was the exact same thing with me when I was at school. I had a friend whose parents gave her £20 for every good grade she recieved, and all I got was a pat on the back and a "what did other people get?".

They're proud of us really though, and will always support you.:)

Best wishes,

E
