Computer science students often disagree, about the best operating system, the best programming language, the best browser, and so on... But there's one thing all of them agree about. They absolutely despise Windows. No matter which version, 3.11, 95, 98, ME, XP, what have you? Bill is the evil king of the Borg, resistence is futile, but they are the brave Kirks and Picards who do resist. They install Linux on their home computer and laugh at the silly plebeians who use their Windows machines as a typewriter. What are they but slaves of a certain American monopolist? Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointing device... WIMPs! A real geek types in his Unix command line and doesn't need that fancy stuff. Unix rocks, Unix rules, Unix never crashes, Unix is their god.

I managed to get an account at the computer science departement, both for their Windows machines and their state of the art Solaris computers. Now such an account is a real bless for students from other faculties, for there's always a lack of computers at the campus. I mainly use them for e-mail and checking the greatwriting site, but still, why wouldn't I do so on one of these famous Solaris machines of the computer science departement?
I entered an empty hall, full of these expensive things and sat down behind a desk. How strange... The display was burned-in. A ghostly image of the log-in screen remained behind. I tried another machine, but the result was the same. Was this how the computer science students treated their beloved Solaris computers? It seemed as if they were never used.
I logged off and walked to the hall with the Windows machines. It was crammed with computer science students...

A topic very close to my own heart.

It comes down to one very simple question: Are you a user or are you a pioneer?

Linux is still an emerging technology, especially where the desktop is concerned but not there yet. To run Linux at the desktop you either need a managed terminal services type solution or a load of knowledge just to do the basics, have a mindset that is set around working for the long term greater good. If you just want to get stuff done it is a reality that you need Windows.

I work in an environment where I am surrounded by some real egg head techies and are always struggling to do just the basic stuff with Linux (SLES) at the desktop. It is getting better but is a long way from being a truly viable alternative, no matter what anyone says.

Good stuff.

Thanks Johnie.
I totally agree with you. The Linux desktops aren't the most user friendly ones.
Perhaps there are people who realy prefer it over Windows and I can see some advantages, but I think many of the CS students at my uni are just parrots ;)

What do most of care? I want a simple way to operate my software, surf, and share my stuff with others. Windows does it for me. If there was a better and cheaper way, surely someone would be out there selling it.

Interesting piece.

Do people hate Bill Gates just because he is disgustingly rich (which is reason enough) or for other reasons?

ok, First an answer to Phil-- Bill Gates has ruthlessly crushed any competition using power and money and forced us to use his patched up system. He also pre-installed his browser to stop better ones being used.He puts stuff out before it's ready using customers to de-bug. His systems are the most vulnerable to viruses. And he doesnt' care.

Now the post: this made me think of my brother who works with VMS and swears by it and is contemptuous of windows. He is even a bit shiffy about unix and claims teh only system is VMS but on a recent visit I noticed his laptop was running....windows. He did have some lame excuse but how I laughed

Great piece of writing I really enjoyed it

Thanks Snodlander, Phil and BBS.
Snodlander: It'll do nice as a commercial eh?

Phil: I think it is a bit of both. Bill did play some dirty tricks on his competitors, but on the other hand, which businessman doesn't? I think that where these CS students are concerned, it's simply snobism.

BBS: Heheh. Caught red handed!
