Pirate Haiku
By Sir_Nigel

Three pirate Haiku poems

I'm so sad today
incautious use of my hook
took out my right eye.

Yes, I have two legs
but true to stereotype
one is made of wood.

The skull and crossbones
hangs limply at my masthead
I'm just a cheap crook.

I totally missed the 'kigo'-season words so essential in defining the mood of a Haiku. Is it just me or can that be ignored?would love to know what u think..!

The thing about Pirate Haiku is there are no rules – it’s the true spirit of piracy, you’re a buccaneer, a rebel, you can just go with the flow, unfettered by convention.

As long as it’s about pirates obviously.

I'm not sure these adhere to the spirit of haiku, but I like them.

I think these are superb; you've created a new niche. I must warn you, though, that haiku purists may take a dim view of pirate haiku.
I've written 'teenage angst haiku' and found it wonderfully cathartic. Sadly, though, the idea didn't take off, so I wish you well with this. Mind if anyone else joins you?

Go ahead - knock yourself out.

Not quite the same thing, Sir_Nigel, but here they are for what it's worth:

We're romantic now
Yo ho ho and jars of rum
Sterilized by time

Disney made us fun
Meet us in the China Seas --
Bet you'll change your mind

Tell me, is this fair?
Theme park thugs with ruddy cheeks
Loved by every brat

I think we've started a new trend here.

By the way, have you ever heard of Cannelloni Haiku?

Remove from package
Heat for twenty five minutes,
Serve when it goes ping.

Twenty-five minutes - soggy.

I cannot remember what they are called -- I took little interest in Japanese culture per se when I was in Japan -- but there are some marvelously funny tongue-in-cheek Japanese haiku. One in particular used to cheer me up, it went something like this:

Now that you are gone
When I crack a lonesome fart
How I miss your laugh

It was much funnier and better written (or translated, as I read this in its English version) than that, but isn't that priceless?

Blue-eyes, calloused hands,
will make any mother weep
as her daughter stares

(couldn't resist)

Well, yes, Elli, but there's another way of looking at it:

Oh, the swarthy rogue
Flirting with these mindless maids!
Jealous mother frowns.

Not me, you understand, but I can imagine . . .

Sorry, Sir_Nigel. I am going back to my writing now.

Written by ellipinnock (1753 comments posted) 23rd February 2007
perhaps?

Mindless maids abound
thinking only with their thighs
flirting through mere spite.

Written by ellipinnock (1753 comments posted) 23rd February 2007
or even 'sheer spite' - that's the trouble with 2 minute haiku.

By the way Sir_N - I liked the original set - pirate haiku that break the rules - priceless

For breaking the rules:
Pirate haiku. Mastercard:
For everything else

I'm going to stop now before I get drummed off site for offences against writing...

This has been burning a hole in my mind:

Masthead's got woodworm
No more jolly rogering
And my flag hangs limp

Somebody put me out of my misery and make me stop.

I started a reply about Mary's mind and limp-masted pirates - but decided to exercise some self control before it burns a hole in my mind too! It's very subsersive this pirate haiku...almost as bad as that Barbie business!

ps. I do feel apologies are in order for swamping the perfectly respectable initial pirate haikus!

Written by Witzl (1585 comments posted) 23rd February 2007
I apologize too. Humbly. Please go and write some pirate haiku on one of my postings. That is what pirates are all about.

Too much frigging in the rigging going on here...
