Life Cycle

Why is it that time seems to go much quicker the older you get?
The last twenty years of my life seem to have lasted all of four years. Christmas comes around every three months now instead of once a year. This is not, however, biographical.

Sixteen today: I feel quite old,
Sophisticated in my new blue jeans
And cool denim shirt. Sixteen.
I am leaving school behind me.
Perhaps I’ll get a job tomorrow,
Perhaps not.  Plenty of time.
I think I will live forever.

Twenty-five today: I feel mature
A new gray suit, for my wedding,
Complete with tie and crisp white shirt.
Ironed this day by my wife to be.
I’ve got a job; I’m in the City.
“Something in Insurance” they say.
My life is all ahead of me.

Thirty-nine today: I feel quite old.
My weekend to see the kids.
At least they love me, or so they say.
What went wrong? Who knows?
Perhaps it was for the best.
She’s happy now in her newfound life.
Mine could be half-over.

Sixty-one today: I know I’m old.
A shiny suit and crumpled shirt.
Ironed by me, but not too well.
The Insurance Company let me go,
“Early retirement” they said.
“Make the most of life, be free.”
I’ll try, because there’s not much left.

Eighty-two today: I’m giving up.
My dressing gown, like me, is frayed.
I should get dressed, but what’s the point.
Oh yes - I remember,
My youngest Grandson is coming today.
In his bright new jeans and denim shirt.
It’s his birthday, Sixteen.

His life lies ahead of him

It's that old circle of life thing isn't it? (Can you hear that awful Disney tune?) Uplifting and depressing at the same time. I'm reaching that age where I meet kids I taught seventeen years ago when they were 7, 8, 9 or 10 with babies and young children. I'm yet to teach the child of a former pupil.

I enjoyed this very much. I'm not sure it's poetry, but it doesn't really matter as it is effective in what it puts across.

One of those well known stages of life. It's not so much when the policemen look younger but when the judges do!
I think you expressed it well without too much angst

I would call this poetry because it causes reflection - I like it very much.

A universal theme, and one of the most poignant.

Well written and sensitive.

This really got to me. There is a Japanese song this reminds me of, about a flower that blooms, fades, dies -- then it all starts up again. I could almost imagine the tune for that, reading your poem.

Except that as you get older you should get more time in which to do the things you never had time to do before. There again, doing these things eats up time much faster I think. This was a good poem and something we all reflect on when we have time to reflect.

Nice poem Cliff. Time goes by too quickly and I am beginning to see the patterns of my own developement now being experienced by my own children.
