To the Polish
By Fledermaus
04 March 2007
The Polish played an important role in the liberation of France, Belgium and the Netherlands, but the sad thing is that while they liberated others, their own nation was 'liberated' by the USSR and they were not allowed to return. Moreover the allies never recognized their deeds until very recently...

More than sixty years ago, the Polish mounted their steeds
Great beasts of steal and iron, urged them on to mighty deeds

Names carved in marble
On a village square

They lost their homeland
While they fought for us

They died in freedom
But they're far from home

Never forget this tragedy
Since while our own lands were free
They had no home to return to

Sixty years is a long time
Only now they're recognized
Too late
Poor men
Heroes

It is a sad fact of war, that nations like Poland get routed and taken over and the rest of the world is too busy with prosperity to lend a hand.

Nice thoughts

Thanks bwoz.
It's a sad history indeed.

I thought the facts and thoughts behind your poem were good, but, although I don't like to criticise, I would have preferred it if you had used one style of poetry and stuck to it. You seem to have this poem divided into two sections. The first verse could have been divided into four lines, rhyming (a) (b) (a) (b). The rhythm is good also. Then you suddenly changed your poem to a list of facts. I think you should have continued in your original style. Well, I would have preferred it, but most people don't agree with my reasoning I think.

Thanks Josie. You're probably right, but I experimented a bit here, as I usually seem to have an abab-rhyme with seven syllables a line :)

Great ending...great beginning...great poem.
I loved how the ending just peels off. The fifth stanza really impacted. Could have been a bit longer

Please, call me John. Real name John Tuscan.
Well...it wasn't that great, where did the rhyme go?
