This follows on from the road trip story I posted recently.
I did post this a few days ago but it needed some work, I hope it has improved. please leave some feedback.

DINNER

The gang met in the bar that night for dinner.  Amy’s eyes were red and her voice was hoarse from shouting.  Scott was quiet and he kept his eyes down, he didn’t want anyone to see his emotions.  The argument from the car had escalated into an all out world and the kitchen sink fight.  He felt they were lost and just causing each other heartache.  He thought about Amy and felt a deep sympathy, he hated that he was causing her pain.

Amy’s thoughts were with Rachael.  She was repeating the heartbreak she went through two years ago when George had cheated the first time.  Amy could now understand some of the feelings Rachael had tried to explain to her.  The feelings of loss and abandonment were in her heart now and it hurt.

Rachael had been alone in her room, pacing back and fore.  Should she phone him?  She asked herself what Amy and Grace would say.  She didn’t want to forgive George again, so she phoned her mum.  Her daughter answered the phone

            “Mummy, Where are you?”

“I’m away with Aunty Amy and Grace.  We’re going to climb a mountain tomorrow then I’ll be back.  Are you and Sammy being good?”

“Yes mum, Granny wants to talk to you”

“Mum what are the kids doing with you?”  Panic shaking her voice.

“He dropped them here an hour ago.  He had a woman in the car with him, and the kids told me that they had seen them kiss.  I’m sorry.”

Her voice sounded high pitched, and tears started down her cheeks as she tried to change the subject.

“Amy and Scott are having troubles.  They bickered all the way up here.”

“They’ll work it out.  You just worry about yourself and the kids.”

Rachael hung up and went for a shower to try and cleanse herself of his influence.  She stood there, the hot water fusing with her tears.  Why hadn’t she been stronger?  Why had she taken him back?  Why was he with this other woman when he was begging her for forgiveness?  She took a deep breath, the tears and anger abated as she made a promise to herself.  He will never make me feel like this again, it’s over.  The water was going cold but she let it rain down on her.  She gave her face one last splash and decided to face the world.

Steve and Grace had spent the last few hours together.  Grace was in love and she thought at 30 it was about time.  Steve was in lust, but he was letting Grace in closer than anyone else.  He had even invited her to meet his parents at the end of the month.  She made him laugh, and they had managed to forget the stress of the trip as they dozed off for an hour.

Amy and Scott had introduced them nearly a year ago.  Grace had worked with Amy for five years and Steve was an old school friend.  The boys had set up a gym together and it was doing great, they had plans to open another within the year.

They ordered drinks, and sat at a table near the fire to look at the dinner menu.  Steve and Grace were exchanging looks filled with desire.  Amy and Scott were doing everything to avoid eye contact, they wanted to look at each other but they didn’t want to see their own feeling mirrored back at them.

Rachael was sitting there quietly, gooseberry she thought.  No one had noticed she was wearing new clothes.  She had spent time making her hair poker straight and her make up perfect, she wished someone would notice.

The waitress arrived as the band started playing the chilli peppers under the bridge.  While they waited for their food they discussed what they thought of the hotel and the band.  Amy smiled at Rachael

“I’m glad you got that top sis.”  Rachael blushed.  She had been wrong thinking no one would notice.  Steve started clowning around.  He could make any one smile so long as he didn’t take it too far.  The group had been friends long enough to know when and how to pull the rains in, but just now they needed him on full steam.

The food arrived and they all admitted that they were ravenous.  They tried mouthfuls from each others plate, commenting politely how nice the food was.  Steve carried on his off the cuff stand up, and by the end of the meal everyone had relaxed and boxed their issues.  They decided to go and try all the pubs within walking distance, there was only two after all.

Before they left the hotel they discussed their plans for tomorrow.  They had decided to hire a guide. Steve had seen one advertised in the hotel reception.  He went and phoned the booking number and when he returned he told everyone that they would be picked up at 8.30 sharp.

I certainly am not in lust! And deny any knowledge of this 'Grace'. God, if my wife finds out! How much do you want to keep it quiet?

Much better
Regards
Steve.

Seems like the intro to something longer (should it be in extended?)

I don't remember the first post - sorry. Interesting characters introduced, but not really set up. For me, you rushed through them a little so that none of them were fully established. This seems like it's going to be a character led piece, not plot, so caring about the characters is pretty important. Perhaps you need to spend a little more time developing each one.

Interesting stuff.

I agree with Phil. I read part 1, but I still feel a little distant from your characters. I think there's a lot of potential in them to tell a good story, I just think you need to give them a little more dimension. Keep going with it.
