Shorts
The Fade

This is my first story and it's extremely short, inspired by something I read on wikipedia a long time ago. Warning: there's a tiny bit of gore.

The rusty guillotine flies through my neck in an instant, causing no pain except for the roar of cheers that suddenly fills my head. I see the world begin to rotate around me like I’m looking out the fingerholes of a bowling ball, and as my face turns backwards I see my stump of a neck spraying blood out of the wooden shackle. Some of it splashes me in the face. As my head drops down into the crowd, I am surprised to be aware of the situation. Suddenly I remember a strange thing I heard long ago, which said that after your head is severed, there are about 20 seconds of consciousness before you black out forever. I now feel pain in my neck, and as a dirt-covered beggar woman catches my head I feel stinging on my face, because her fingers clutch my cheeks and her thumbs press against my eyes. My sense of balance is completely destroyed, and I begin to gag, although I don’t have any stomach to empty. I can feel the world fading, and as the beggar woman raises my head above the crowd to the cheers of the onlookers, they are all a grey mass with only the slightest detail. Their screams are faint, and I feel the end rushing towards me like the tomatoes and lettuce sailing through the air.

Welcome to the site and if this is a sample of your work I think we are in for some interesting reading.
Reading this was a bit like watch a car accident you want to stop looking but you continue with horrid fascination.
A pacy [if queasy] read and a quirky and orginal piece. I'm not sure what the lettuce and tomatoes were for at the end- it's a bit too late for salad.
cheers

I suppose all of us wonder how it feels to have one's head cut off, though I for one sincerely hope I never find out. Reading your story has given me an even better idea of what it must be like than I want to have -- but never mind. What's a bit of gore for the sake of art? As long as I never have to see this. . .

Your style is certainly compelling, and I found myself feeling for this person. I assumed that the lettuces and tomatoes were missiles thrown by the crowd, but talk about insult to injury. Jane, above, is right: it is too late for salad!

Years ago I once read a YA novel entitled 'The Fade,' about something completely different. But the writer was, interestingly enough, a Canadian!

I thought this a very effective piece. My toes were curling as I read. As BBS, I wanted to look away, but it was too compelling.

Super stuff.

Witzl: You suppose all of wonder how it feels to have your head chopped off? Not me - until now. What other things do you wonder that I'm missing out on?

Thank you for your encouragement, and I'm glad it didn't gross you guys out.

I suppose it is kind of silly for the crowd to throw things after the head is cut off, but I always thought it was neat how people throw vegetables at outcasts.

thanks again, and now i'm off to school.

Actually - you did 'gross me out' - but that doesn't take anything away from your writing - just the opposite in fact. I forgot to mention before, you might consider leaving the fruit and veg out. Even though it probably happened, it adds nothing to your piece.

Look forward to more.

Phil.

Yes. Pualdo you are, in fact ,right; throwing vegetables at outcasts has a long and venerable history in this country. It proved very popular and for a while rivalled morris dancing, it only faded out when the gun was invented

I was grossed out too, but in a good way. Very effective and interesting piece.

What a great piece. Reminds me of the part in I: Claudius [BBC film version] when Messalina gets decapitated...that's very clever too, but no where near as graphic.

Nicely done pualdo, welcome to GW :grin
