WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
By JohnnyD
03 April 2007
This poem titled KYA HOGA by famous Hindi poetess VEERA has touched me to a great deal. I have tried my best to bring out the real meaning of her poem while translating it.
It is still the bitter truth of rural India and small towns.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

Mother
If I don't learn
How to cook
What will happen?

Our name will be dishonoured
In your in-laws' home!

Mother
If I am unable
To knit and clean the house
Or look after the household chores
What will happen?

Your father's honours would be disgraced
We won't survive
And be able to show our faces in society!

Mother
If like brother
I wish to roam around the street
Come late night at home
Swear like a man
And wear pant and shirt all the time

Don't listen
To the laws
Of these four walls
What will happen?

You will kill us alive
We won't even get a place in hell!

Mother
I really don't wish to know
What will happen to you all
And what will happen to others?

Mother
I only wish to know
What will happen in my life?

What will happen?

Veera would be surprised if she knew the answer to her questions. This is what would happen: Women would find a husband who can cook as well as any woman. Veera would find that handknitting is only a hobby, practised by men and women alike in their spare time. When both husband and wife work outside of the home (or are retired) then the cleaning has to be shared. She might be most surprised to visit the streets of Britain on Friday and Saturday nights to see what else happens as the young males and females alike roam the streets in a drunken state. I'm not sure if there are any more laws/rules in the homes of Britain any more. Perhaps others would like to tell me - but when I was young there definitely were and you knew not to overstep the line.
