No Talking During A Meal.

Unsaid words between Father and Son...always more difficult to communicate anything between the two..yes??...not quite sure of this.

With the same loud steps
I walk down the stairs
Ruffled hair with
'The Simpsons' boxers.
He hands me a bowl of cereal
A carton of milk
Same old everything.

The paper he reads has tragedies
Nothing new and news of some celebrities.

But he does not speak today
Passionately of the world's affairs
His arms do not fly around
As he frames a new foreign policy.
He has his glasses on
Strange for a man who has
Never found them in the mornings.

There are eggs.Nicely done!
Coffee and tea and bread and buns.

I am fully awake and aware
Of the ruffling of the paper.
He puts it down,gets up
Says nothing.
A minute later with hardly
A look exchanged
He locates his keys and leaves.

I know he loves me terribly and is sad. This I acknowledge.
For I would be leaving him alone the next day to attend college.

We've all seen this happen when we've left home. In my case I went off to Canada at a time when we usually said goodbye for good. Very hard to take, and yet, keeping quiet keeps away from you the real way that they feel inside. Your turn will come one day and then you will understand fully. I hope college went well, and I guess that college must be in another town.
Walking away
Written by Katsinella (28 comments posted) 6th April 2007
This reminds me a little of a poem by Cecil Day Lewis. It's the father's point of view.

I have had worse partings, but none that so
Gnaws at my mind still. Perhaps it is roughly
Saying what God alone could perfectly show --
How selfhood begins with a walking away,
And love is proved in the letting go.

It's a point we can all relate to. A well put in your poem.
