Somebody else was having a go at Gilbert's lyrics, so why shouldn't I?

This was sparked a long time ago when I used to sing in a Gilbert and Sullivan operatic society. Yes, it was my idea to give the offender "scores on the doors" with an overall average. We did it, too!

The melody comes from The Mikado, but I have shortened the chorus bits since they were too repetitive.

The old conductor, named Anon
with his conductor’s jacket on
in dressing room did nightly loom
with spectacles invested.
Behind them his conductor’s eye
was roving low and roving high,
and all the girls knew quite well why
Conductor’s interested.

And you will say, and so will I,
that they were right to wave goodbye!

This presence bold you may assume
caused great dismay throughout the room,
for young and old and shy and bold
were equally inspected.
The lass with snapped elastic band
must stand strategically fanned,
or she’d be offered a helping hand –
she usually objected.

And you’ll allow, as I expect,
that she was right to so object!

The ladies’ chorus promptly then
who were all judges of their men
displayed their judging out of ten
for this professional voyeur.
The net result I’ll tell to you –
you need not blush, for it’s not blue –
the average was four point two
and not a fraction higher.

And we were right, I think you’ll say,
to judge him in this kind of way!

Fellow Savoyard and AmDram. I can't place the original Title. In fact I keep dragging it off to the Gondoliers.

"That overated, ego-sated,
Self inflated, pantaloon,
The Conductor would-be seductor."

However I enjoyed your piece and it is exceptionally well written.

I have no handle on this, and so much (I suppose) is lost on me. I actually met my wife through am-dram-operatics - but I was prompting by accident and I'm not really steeped in any tradition or knowledge.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the rhythms and flow of this. I'm sure he didn't mind the judging so long as he got his eye-full.

Phil.

He did, Phil, and was as amused anyone by the average (carefully cooked by me to ensure it was well under 50%). He is a real person:

so as not to calumniate anyone on that page, it's the bloke in the white jacket at the top waving his hands about that is the subject of the poem.
Pish Tush!

Our great fellpony, clever one!
Who's brought us this good bit of fun
Does it so well
That truth to tell
We're filled with admiration . . .

And I'll bet this brought down the house! We had a fellow just like yours in our own local theatre when we did The Pirates of Penzance. In the scene where the pirates had to grab us daughters, he grabbed some of us with a little too much fervour. In a way it was good that he did -- our screams and struggles were far more authentic that way.

No knowledge of Gilbert and Sullivan whatsoever, but still heartily enjoyed the piece :)
