Environment Secretary David Miliband told a news conference today that whilst he
deplored the recent increase in both knife and gun crime, it was gratifying from an
environmental point of view that there were far more stabbings than shootings.
Mr Miliband stated that knife crime comes very low on the noise pollution scale,
being by its nature a virtually silent crime, if one discounts the initial scream of the
victim of course. Gun crime on the other hand, particularly when associated with so-
called `drive-by` slaying, with its inherent engine revving, squealing tyres and
noxious exhaust emissions, is very bad news for the environment. Mr Miliband went
on to say that guns also created a great deal of litter, with their spent cartridge shells
becoming quite an eyesore in and around our inner city streets.
When asked if he thought such matters had any relevence given that the police
seemed powerless to stem the growing wave of killings, Mr Miliband replied that
everything possible was being done to make sure the brown field sites for the 2012
Olympic games were completely clear of any forms of toxic waste.

I've got some old lead piping in the garden at the moment. I wonder if that would be approved of by the green lobby. Funny piece. Enjoyed the way the end modelled politician speak. Phil. |

| Beautifully acerbic, Woody. A worthy contribution to the environmental gravy train. I've often felt simple strangulation with bare hands to be the most eco-friendly option, particularly as an electoral policy - "turning Britain green... or blue". Very enjoyable. |

You should really send this into the Today programme on R4. I'll bet they would read it out. A really clever take on the situation, mind it's only a matter of time befor one crackpot politician says something like this. It's getting difficult to send up the govt now but I think you managed to show them up well. I suppose they will claim that hanging is eco-friendly [with orangic hemp,of course] cheers Jane

A sad footnote- I read in a paper that, "The Gunmen are victims too" I read no further fearing somehow i would find that it was really all our fault.
