Hank William's Voice
By tartqueen

A Poem about Hank Williams.  Just a short one because most of the poems I write are very short.

A nasal whine that sounded like

The whistle of a train;

But held such a compelling note

That made it sustain

In the hearts and minds of men and women

like the memory of pain.

Nice and neatly said

Williams died of back pain, after operations that tried to stiffen his back to ease his ailing back's bones.

Ordinarily, I'd say line 4 "That made it sustain" has no poetic-flow in the position it's occupying - I might ordinarily say that it even stiffens on the tongue - makes the tongue trip on the words.

But in this case, it's neat. neatly-nice - it's "like the memory of the pain".
