Fit  for  treasons  statagems  and  spoils

                     Music  And  Arthritis

        A tenor oils along Firenza's street ;
        Strauss polkas on Vienna's ballroom  floors ,
        Or madcap Mozart lifts his lightsome feet ;
        Sculthorpe receives a concert hall's applause .

        Announcers all frustrate my comprehension
        by setting the music within its long tradition,
        explaining with a genteel condescension
        the esoteric points of composition .

       And while they labour hard to make their points
       I lie here gazing blankly at the ceiling ,
       Limbs more leaden than some poor fettered wretch
       and racked by the body's need to flex and stretch .
       Music may work wonders in soul's  healing
       but it can never ease my aching joints  .

I remember a lecturer once saying that English teachers are "professional explainers of jokes". I suppose that puts them in the same class as announcers on classical radio programmes.

Perhaps it's all the announcers' condescension that gets into your joints and prevents the music oiling them. Have you tried taking a regular dose of vitamin CDs?

Enjoyed your fourteen-liner. Old habits die hard.

I love the first line of this - beautifully descriptive.

The worst thing about any radio station is, I think, the announcers, they all seem to be either far too inane ro far too highbrow and nothing inbetween. But then maybe I'm just grouchy :)

As always, you have my envy at your being able to rhyme the flippin' thing so effortlessly!

Good stuff

Enjoyed this Brian - with Elli on announcers - and that first line.

Phil.

This is very well written and I like the way it moves from the mood of the first stanza through the complaint of the second, until we almost see you lying in discomfort on your bed and feel the stiffness of your aching joints.

I recommend glucosamine though, and stay off anything with wheat in it, as well as oranges and tomatos. Although you may feel life wouldn't be worth living in that case!

Well done. :)
