The Silent Hunter
By amethyst
17 July 2005

Silence shattered in the dead of night

Monkeys screech, a cacaphony from high in the trees

Deer flee in fright

Shadows in the moonlight watching

As the master predator stalks his prey

Silently creeping not a sound does he make

Slowly, stealthily patiently he will wait

Golden eyes watch with anticipation

His hunger bloodthirsty

A solitary beast so quick so sleek

Pounces on his prey without mercy

One swift bite

One short squeal

Silence returns to the night

As the leopard sits to feast

i envisioned a man first with a rifle and savanah hat, then a deerstalker hat as i read further
then quite surprised when it turned out to be a leopard
you worked it well
a question of scale .......

Just the title (before I even opened the poem to read it! :) ) had me thinking of our young (rescued) kitten, who has shown a surprisingly well-developed hunting skill during the past week - two starlings, a sparrow, two mice and an (aborted attempt!!) to see off a maurauding hedgehog have impressed on me that a demestic cat is only ever two meals away from a savage leopard/panther/sabre-toothed tiger!! :grin

Any more 'in the pipeline' ??
oops!

The pauses between each of the lines (which are short) really builds the tension.

It was accurate aswell, which is great - I hate it when people think the lion is the king of the jungle
