The Spread of Years
By patterjack
07 May 2007
This sonnet fits into the love and marriage sequence partly before , partly afterwards in time  , with   Midstream  in  Marriage

                    The  Spread  of  Years

She held great strengths within her from the start
though to herself , for youthful years unknown
until she learned , by following  her heart,
to trace the paths that it had lately shown.
She took those paths, some thought to her dishonour,
but brushing aside all others' specious judging
she found love, lavished warm and strong  upon  her
from one who gave it freely and unbegrudging .
Not all storms yet have passed , but in her grace
         she faces the few late problems confident;
her answers to the ones she must still face
she gives with wisdom , and with deep content .
The passing of maturing fruitful years
have left no need for any regretful tears

Broad sweeps where some of the previous ones were a study in specific detail. If you took out lines nine and ten this could almost be a eulogy. My imagination, or deliberate?

Enjoyed very much.

I like this very much. I read it aloud to myself and found it pleasingly rhythmic, almost musical. I liked and identified with the ideas expressed and the language is very well chosen.

When I read it aloud I felt it flowed better if read as "from one who gave it freely and ungrudging" and I also found myself saying "her answers to the ones she still must face" rather than "must still face" but that may be an entirely personal preference.

I think it's a very graceful and profound piece.

Regards,
