Shock as Herod's Tomb is discovered in Herodium.

Well, duh!!

The archaeological world was stunned today as one of their number discovered Herod's tomb in Herodium.

A shocked spokesperson said "How ironic is that? Herodium was the last place on our list to search. We thought it was just a spoof name to encourage our members to waste their resources digging and discovering nothing at all. Or worse, discovering an ancient scroll inscribed with the words "Herod woz 'ere".

When interviewed Israeli archaeologist Ehud Netzer sobbed, " I feel so stupid! I've looked everywhere for this damn tomb and here it was all the time. I've wasted 30 years of my life." Previously Mr. Netzer’s best-known find was the carved letters "A.S." at the entrance to a long dark tunnel.

The discovery of Herod’s tomb has given fresh hope at home and abroad.

British police have jetted off to the small town of Lucan in Ontario, Canada. Inspector Korner of the Yard leads the team. As he boarded a British Airways 747 at Heathrow he admitted that his enquiry has been given fresh impetus. "We now have a real chance, after all these years, of arresting the murdering toff."

Irish Police have instructed all geography teachers to search worldwide for a city, town, hamlet or stable block by the name of Shergar or Shergarville.

And finally, over 4,000 US helicopter gunships are closing in on the settlement of Laden in Harlen County, Kentucky, USA.

It all seems far too obvious doesn't it?

I can't help feeling a bit sorry for Mr Netzer after wasting all those years. I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious but I don't get the significance of the letters "A.S."

I like the idea of all those helicopters pestering the poor residents of Laden. I wonder how much interest they've already had from the media.

Good fun, enjoyed.

Sorry, didn't get the AS reference. Otherwise, enjoyable piece.

A delightfully silly piece. You took up the idea and just went with it. I suppose you could have gone on and on with this but you stopped at the right time without killing the joke
cheers

Also liked the way you ran with the idea - just about the right length. Apparently Herod's antics have been largely exaggerated in terms of massacring new-born babies, since the area was so small in population, there would have been no more than about six. Just when you need a spin doctor.... Very enjoyable.

Hi guys!

The moment you take your eye off the ball you get 5 reviews all at once. Thank you.

I'm glad you found it as funny and as silly as I did.

BTW The reference to AS is from Jules Verne's "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" where our intrepid explorers follow signs left by Arne Saknussemm, who originally found the path, and carved his initials into the stone for others to follow.

I thought it a bit vague when I wrote it.....

I heard from someone who met some tourists in Troyes (France) who asked where they could find the famous horse from the Illiad... :?

Enjoyable piece.

Re: Arne Saknussemm.
'Long live the classics' A book, films, two albums by Rick Wakeman, and some people didn't get it!
Keep the flame alive.

Best wishes
Steve.

I read somewhere a comment from a gum-chewing US General reporting back to Congress that they`d, `Bin Laden, but there was nothin` there...`

Nice bit of `lateral thinking` Wltshr, and very entertaining.
