I went to a Halle concert last night - and the conductor, Susanna Malkki, was certainly part of the entertainment. She did a wonderful job.

It was the last of a 9 concert series - much of it familiar classical music - but last night they had invited 75 children from 3 local schools, and there were 3 of the orchestra who would be working with them over the next month to help them create a piece of music of their own. The kids were young - only about 8 - and they sat in the chorus seats - so we could see how they struggled to stay awake til the end.

Female Conductor
Young, thin, severe ponytail.
Long fitted jacket.
Her flat shoes danced, arms piercing.
She walked like a man
Proud, Assured, yet beautiful
The Halle

Gutsy, gusty, blowsy brass
Steady solid drum
Willowy, whispering winds
Plucky violins
Magic moments for the kids.

Once again you seem to have summed up the experience in a very few well chosen words.
I particularly liked 'Her flat shoes danced, arms piercing'
I could see her in front of her orchestra.
Also liked alliteration in the second.
Good one

You are getting addicted to these Jean!

I liked this pair. The first I really liked very much (typo in the penultimate line?). I would even have been tempted to put three full stops in the first line.

I liked the second as well - especially the opening line. Not so sure about the last line - doesn't quite seem to fit the tone of the rest (or your description of the the kids falling asleep in the intro!).

You seem to have a feeling for these. Enjoyed.

Elli
Thanks Lizzy and Elli

I made some of the changes you suggested, Elli. But if I hadn't told you some of the kids were falling asleep, would it still have been a bad line? Their main peace was the first one and they were very intent on that. But it was a late night for 8 year olds when it finally finished.

What a vivid picture you paint. It must have been a great night. I especially like the second one; it described everything so well. and leave the line about the kids in it's much more up lifting and suits the piece [don't let the truth spoil a good poem]
cheers

These are really good, Jean, but I particularly like the onomatopoeia of the second one - if that's what it is. Your choice of words seemed to echo the quality of the instruments' sound. Keep them coming, I like them.

Enjoyed these Jean especially the first. Really caught something there. We take the kids from work to the Bridgewater Hall to see the Halle once a year. Quite an experience.

Phil.

Nice to know Phil that you were able to know the building and the experience. Our tickets are on the very top floor, but right in the centre, so very good for acoustics. And for keeping track of about everything else that is going on too.
