The Flying Dutchman
By Fledermaus
10 May 2007
With Johnny, Orlando and Keira returning to the cinema, the real story of the Flying Dutchman deserves some attention, doesn't it? I heard she's still sighted near the South African coast sometimes.

A ghostly story is told
About the Cape of Good Hope
And its ocean waters cold
At the very world's end's slope

Many sailor, panic struck
Images in his mem'ry burned
Know's how he taunted his luck
And what lesson he has learned

Against the wind, with bloodred sails
Cursed until the day of doom
When our God at last prevails
She shall haunt the ocean's gloom

Sailed away at Easter tide
Churchbells rang, she disobeyed
Now there's nowhere she can hide
She shall sail to hell's own gate

I could do with a history lesson in the real Flying Dutchman story. I enjoyed this, but realised that I was missing the point. Was it just because he missed church on Easter that he had such bad luck? I

Hi Jean,
There are several stories. One says that the captain sailed away on Easter, inspite of the warnings of his crew. Another that he threw his bible into the sea. It isn't even clear where these things are suposed to have happened. I googled around a bit, but it seems everyone has a different story. Yet according to most the captain is suposed to have challenged God that he would sail around the Cape, even if it would take an eternity.

A well constructed and informative piece. I feel I know a little more about such a famous fable.
cheers

Thanks BBS.
I'm afraid the above is all I know about it... Funnily enough the Dutch and the English wikipedia disagree as to where the ship came from.
