The Cat in the Shadows
By AnnieSeed
11 May 2007
Gorby died on 29 April 2001, in my arms at the vets, while waiting to be put to sleep.  I buried him in my mother's garden in Lincolnshire, and was surprised when I saw him a few times after his death. Although I was extremely upset when he died, in fact I didn't see him until well after I'd calmed down and accepted his death.

You are always here
Somewhere on the edge of vision
Walking with evening shadows
Leaving no pawprints in the dew
You slip silently along walls and pathways
Where the ghosts of summer go.

We have seen you lately by the window
Where the lavender once grew
And crossing the lawn at midday
Watched by the other cats
And we have seen you
Slip with us through gates in winter
And padding down the stairs
Here, where you never lived
Vanish noiseless into shadow.

This is lump in the throat stuff for me

My lovely Siamese , Segiel Fa Ying affectionately known as Ting -- long after her death would in spirit still dash up the stairs between my feet .

We have left that house now , and I am sometimes sentimentally worried still that her little ghost may be lonely

Well Gorby followed me to a new home - I only saw him at the house I was living when he died, but my ex, who thought I was nuts when I said I'd seen him, saw him at the new house after we'd moved. I am sure Segiel is either still with you or has moved on to whatever place they go to. I haven't seen Gorby for a few years now - most likely he's with Segiel and they're swapping stories about us!

and memories of themselves in places they have been well cared for.

Perhaps this is one reason why the melody everyone associates with the musical "Cats" is called "Memories" ???

I've lost more than one feline companion over the years. It's always hard, but I think I'm right in saying that I've had 'visits' from all of them, long after they've gone to the Heavyside Layer .....

Patterjack: you had ONE (solo) Siamese? and you BOTH retained a degree of sanity??? That's impressive! Did the house survive, too? :grin

I liked this poem and could easily picture Gorby the cat padding through rooms he had never been in. My cat follows me everywhere too, though she pretends that she's not really doing so.

For what it's worth, I've had six Siamese cats; one of them gave birth on me one memorable night, as I slept. I woke up to the sound of purring -- and tiny kitten voices -- wondering who'd dumped the water all over me. It's amazing I'm still sane after that.

What lovely stories. I know just how you feel. My little Jack Russell, Gemma, died last August - and Gemma was one of many lovely pets who I loved dearly. I'm sure they must have souls, and I look forward to seeing them all again, for they were the truest friends I've ever had in life - their love far outpassing human love. God bless them every one and I hope that those who ill-treat animals get their cruelty returned to them fourfold.
You're not wrong, Josie

It's plain to see animals have souls - and frankly I've seen more humans whose possession of a soul was questionable, than animals. I remember once upsetting a fundamentalist Christian because he said animals didn't go to heaven and I said if there were none there when I arrived I would Complain to the Management.

I'm a "doggie person" rather than a cat lover, but I understand this very well. I've had a series of dogs over the years (four at the moment, all rescues). I try to amke sure that when they die, they die being hugged and held.

Afterwards, I bury them in the garden and plant something beautiful over the grave; lilac, rose, crocuses....

I'm an aetheist, but when questioned on the subject of whether animals have souls, my best answer is that if we have souls, then so do they...
