Prince Harry - First Among Equals - or - Waste of Space.

Certainly not 'not news.' Just couldn't think of where else to post. Definitely not funny either. In fact there's not a great deal of merit in this at all.

Maybe it'll stir a little debate. I realise by having a go at one of St Diana's offspring I may invoke the wrath of Express readers everywhere; but hey, someone's got to do it.

So Prince Harry is not to go and fight in Iraq. His Commanding Officer claims it will be too dangerous for him and his colleagues.

While I’m all for everyone not fighting in Iraq, just what did he join the Army for, and why did they take him on? Yet another example of special treatment being metered out due to an accident of birth.

Imagine, me at nineteen.

Recruiting Sergeant: And what can I do for you sir?
Phil:                        I’d like to join the army please.
Recruiting Sergeant: Come to the right place.
Phil:                        Yes. I quite fancy the uniform.
Recruiting Sergeant: Good.
Phil:                        And the playing with guns.
Recruiting Sergeant: Good.
Phil:                        And all that world travel.
Recruiting Sergeant: Good. You sound like just what we’re looking for. Sign here.
Phil:                        Just one thing. If it does come to a war, I can’t be involved.
Recruiting Sergeant: Oh, and why not?
Phil:                        I’m just too precious.
Recruiting Sergeant: Just piss off.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, just what is the army going to have Prince Harry do? There’s always potato peeling or polishing tanks – but can you see him getting his hands that dirty?

And how disappointed Harry must be. He can’t go out and shoot anyone. If I were him I wouldn’t worry too much about that. His grandfather could arrange some shooting party, I’m sure.

So, the royals: what can they do besides spend our tax money, inherit our heritage, fornicate, divorce, remarry a horse, keep the Daily Express in print, embarrass us etc etc ad nauseum?

As one GW member once posted – they survive. It’s what they exist for.

How many bereaved parents wish their child had been christened Harry Windsor?

I take it that you are not a monarchist?
I smiled cynically till your last line when i almost cried at the inequality.
Well written and very very true.

Yes, I thought your last line said it all. It was a good read.

I guess there will be many column inches in the press about this one, and I`m sure the cartoonists will have a field day. Personally I don`t know why on earth it was ever muted that he should go to Iraq when there was never a snowball`s chance of him ever getting so much as a grain of Baghdad sand up his royal nostrils. No doubt the spin doctors will say it was done to protect all the other soldiers in his regiment. Just shows their contempt for the British public I suppose....Still, we should be thankful Andrew`s still out there, doing his best to preserve the best of our threatened golf courses. Good on ya Andie!

Almost a Republican,

A very well argued piece Phil. I almost feel sorry for those royals. All that wealth and privilege makes them too much of a target.

Cheers.

Iwas thinking of doing something on this but I don't think I could match the vitriol of this piece, phil. The ironic thing is he is totally expendible. The Royal Family are programmed to survive it is all they do and there are others in line for the throne so it wouldn't matter a damn if he was killed, anyway. It's not like the monarchy is in any danger. It might solve a problem, he's obviously Hewitt's son anyway just look at him.
Well done on getting it out so quickly. It really packs a punch
cheers

The spin doctors have already stated that, not sending Harry is to protect the other soldiers.
So does that mean that no more of our boys and girls will die in Iraq?
Perhaps we should have not sent him years ago!

Good read Phil

Reading this again I think you could expand that dialogue and post it in the comedy script. I think it has the makings of a great piece of satire, loved the last two lines. It's comedy with a bite.

I greatly enjoyed reading this as well as the various comments.

It does seem ridiculous, the whole business of to-fight-or-not-to-fight for Harry. I agree with Jane that you could expand that dialogue and it would be all the better for it.

I'd say I was almost a Republican too, but that means something entirely different in the States and so I won't.

If it weren't for the fact we'd have to be a Republic I wouldn't be a Monarchist albeit tepid to the point of freezing.

Just imagine President Blair.

Nough said,

Not altogether sure Harry can be blamed for not going to Iraq BUT he can be blamed for not resigning his commission in protest. Nice piece Phil but you could make a great sketch out of this!
