Return Visit
By Bagheera
19 May 2007
Abroad at the moment, visiting a friend whose daughter is being confirmed.
We lived in this town (in Denmark) until about 15 years ago. How things change ........

The Bear, BTW, is a STATUE, a symbol used on the town's heraldic shield

The poet (v.2) is Erik Grip, who wrote an unashamed lovesong to the town, using the melody "The Town I loved so Well" (written about Belfast, recorded by many Irish folk bands)

The town I loved has changed: the Market Square
Once guarded by a patient, friendly bear
The town's protector
Today stands empty. Yet, all around
Are streets: torn, ravished. Even the very ground
This proud town's people walk upon
Is ugly, rough, uneven.
The bear - reluctantly, methinks - has ceded place
To steel-and-concrete plumbing. Water plays
The bear, perforce, may only watch
Powerless, shunted into an obscure, uncomfortable corner

Yet children love him still, pet his solid shoulders
Whisper secrets, share with him their ice creams
Ask older sibling, parents, grandparents
To tell tales of wise Bruin as they clamber on his back
Or of Nykøbing town itself, seven hundred years of history passed
But vibrant still
The poet's words, evocative and wild
Truly this is "The Town I Loved as a Child"
My heart still yearns
One day - one day soon
I will return

I can imagine this town, it is sad that the old character seems to be nearly lost apart from the bear. I like the way it reads too, but I find the end a bit confusing, I thought you had returned already!

I think I know the tune you mean and it fits the content well. Considering your rants about how Liverpool went downhill I hope you'll find a way back to Denmark some day. They say the Danish are the happiest people on earth ;)

I drove through the centre of my hometown for the first time in twenty years a few weeks ago. It was completely different. Although it was certainly more prosperous, I was left feeling a little sad.

Enjoyed your piece. Going back isn't easy.

Lovely poem, and very well described. We could see the square as it was, and as it now is, and feel some of your emotions.

As Phil so wisely said "going back isn't easy". I too live in exile and can identify with the sentiments expressed in this lovely poem.
