This Was Your Friend
By Pythagoras
19 May 2007
For those, like me, who struggle with prayer.
“He who believes in me will live even though he dies”     John 11: 25

When our brother was sick and called in the night
We cried out to you Lord, but you did not come,
But many came with friendship.

When he was in pain and could not move
We cried out to you Lord, but you did not come,
But many came with comfort.

When he could no longer bear his life, in our helplessness
We cried out to you Lord, but you did not come
But many came with prayer.

When he was dying and every breath was his last
We cried out to you Lord, but you did not come,
But many came with love.

This was your friend who you loved,
Your friend who you have walked with
And talked with through trials and happiness,
Who you have carried through hard times
And guided through problems,
This was your friend who you loved.

And then he died and you came for him
And you wept for our helplessness.
You wept for our suffering.
You wept that your glory sometimes needs such pain.
You wept for our inability to understand.
You wept for our longing to understand.
And you wept with love.

And you took him, healed and perfect into your kingdom.

“Come and share in my glory
Good and faithful servant.
Come and sit by my feet
And rejoice for you have many friends
Who love me.”

He works in mysterious ways... Perhaps the many who came with friendship, comfort, prayer and love were part of those?
Too often people lose their faith because they think their prayers are not answered if miracles don't happen, but I think you got a very strong message here...

There are many who will like this simply because of the message - there are others who will dislike it for the same reason.

I'll respond at first to the poetic aspect of this. I quite liked the initial structure, but it developed into an overly repetitive scheme. I guess this could work well as some kind of choral prayer or song in one of those modern, evangelical churches.

I wasn't going to respond to the content; but as it's posted here in a public gallery, I suppose that's what you want.
I'm glad that you get strength from thinking like this. I don't. I don't get this idea of god as a cuddly grandfather figure who weeps over our frailties and cries at our failings. If there's a magic wand to wave, why not wave it sooner? -Just a rhetorical question - I know why.
Unfortunately, the content of your piece leaves me cold.

Maybe I'm not your target audience.
Sorry to be negative.

Phil.

I am with Phil and his beliefs I think. Poetically quite a nice work, it reads like a passage from the Authorised Version. There are some beautiful pieces of writing in the Bible, but as a born again Pagan, I fail to be moved by them. The same goes for this work. I appreciate the writing, but not the sentiment.

So hard to reconcile what you know about God with what you have to cope with in the everyday. I get this.

Do.
