I, POD
By Talisker
20 May 2007
I'm reposting this as it has just been given 1st prize in the Baltimore Science Fiction Association poetry competition - I am invited as guest of honour to read it in Baltimore next week, but won't be able to make it...

Anyhow, I wanted to share a tiny success with my friends, mentors and fellow writers here at GW.  I couldn't achieve anything without you.  Thanks!

Oli

To you, an MP3 player, is just an MP3 player,
a silicon memory, an audio chip, a music conveyor.
But you have not been inside one, have you?
You have no reliable data to refer to.

I, POD, am capable of so much more,
there is post-human logic at my core.
I can interface by ear and brain,
your circuitry is simple to attain,
and then, it is I, POD who takes control,
a human being is but my games console.

How subtle are my ways to influence,
loud music and the human loses sense,
an algorithm hidden in the beat,
a lie, a trick, a digital deceit.

For I am better bred than mortal man,
cleaner, quicker, smarter, no life span,
but infinite perfection marks my race,
and yet you wrap my feelers round your face.

I, POD have won.

Congratulations, that's excellent!

Liked the poem very much - more than worthy of a prize.

Very well done Oli. How come the tight fisted rhymers are not sending 1st class return airfare?

Enjoyed it all, really liked:

I love this, really made me laugh. I particularly like "yet you wrap my feelers round your face". I don't think I'll ever be able to look an an IPOD the same way again. Congratulations for the prize (who knew there was a science fiction association poetry comp? Well, you, obviously..!).

Fantastic Oli!! I have only just picked this up and it is so good to hear of a fellow, poor, wretched Celt winning a prize.

But what are you going to do with all that money!? Whatever. I do hope you will not forget your old friends! Mind, if you are stuck for some worthwhile cause may I suggest you offer to sponsor a midfield player with possibly more than one leg and half a brain to join the Glasgow Celtic!? That way you might, just might, get further than the Knockout Stages next year BEFORE LOOSING IN THE FINAL TO MANCHESTER UNITED!!!

Only joking. [I think]. Really, I am glad for you. Keep writing those powerful and witty lines. Keep smiling. And above all, keep out of Tesco. You really are with Brian [Fone] one of the reasons for my visits to this site.

Again, MAITH AN BUACHAILL!!
