Woman, Forgive If You Wish
By uche
01 June 2007
This poem is about the relationship between oil companies and their host communities.

Woman
your afterscent still catches on
in my hairs
      years after I straddled you

forgive, if you wish
the damage long done:
its imprints yet raw in your mind
      I know

to forget is harder
but pleasure weakens resolve
oil is thicker than blood
      we both know

& so I sidestepped morality
& gave full rein to forceful entry
my thrusts gouged
cut pipelines through your breast & loins

earth burst
with such crude emotions
of overflowing oil
      I still remember

Woman
I’ve sapped you, fluids & all
It was unavoidable
    If you only understand

I’m anything but human
no blood flows in machines
& the beast in me
     no greed can sate

forgive, I plead
forgive my wonted lust for fatty lands
forget my memorable drive
     that ripped open your womb:

all this is irreversible, forgive
if you wish to forget.

I liked this very much - with reservations.

It puts across to issues clearly and the metaphor gives it a more human, emotive face. However, I did find the metaphor a little clumsy and unrefined. Good idea though.

Personally, I'd avoid using '&' in any writing. 'And' has the same beat and so shouldn't impact on any rhythm you establish.
