2012 Olympic Logo

There's probably a 'Not News' piece here somewhere, but I'm not in a sarcastic mood.

London 2012

£400 000 to create a logo for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

I guess it’s easy to knock. Already on the BBC News website there are ten or so cobbled together examples provided by news bloggers. Some are tongue in cheek, but others are excellent. So why £400 000?

I’m guessing here, but I suppose this went out to a branding consultant. For anyone not familiar with consultancy fees, £400 000 suddenly seems pretty cheap. The consultants might claim they undertook a lot of market research – what type of image was likely to engage ‘all sections of society’ etc? I’m sure there were consultants sub-contractors to pay – advertising experts, graphic designers, IT technicians, caterers and so on.

Car companies reputedly spend many more times this figure when they brand new vehicles. After all, who would want to name a car ‘The Scatta’ when it turns out to be ‘shit’ in Greek. A name or graphic is very important. Also, £400 000 might be seen as a relatively small amount of money to the Southern based Olympic team. It probably wouldn’t even buy a reasonably modest house in central London.

The thing that gets me is: all that money, and they couldn’t even capitalise London.

Just think where the money being spent on the Olympics could be spent to help people where it is really needed.

I bet the artist is happy. Curious how much the design of the mascots is going to cost.
Olympic (?) logo

Hi Phil
I'm in the 'waste of money' camp on this logo. If london and the Olympic rings were removed from it, how many people would actually realise that it was for the 2012 Olympics ? Very few I would think. A good logo embodies some quality or qualities of the product it symbolises, this doesn't even tell you the year without you being told. That is why it is a waste of £400,000, it doesn't work.
I hope the rest of the money is spent more carefully and wisely....

Man, I could do a better job for four hundred pounds. You guys got ripped.

Good point about car names, though. I heard a story a while back that the Chevy Nova was a huge flop in Latin America. None of the WASPs in the marketing department in Detroit was aware that "Chevy no va" means "Chevy doesn't go" in Spanish. A couple of bucks of research there might have been money well spent.
