Scene 2 Scene Description: A classroom. There is a teacher's desk on stage left, marking the area as "the front of the class". There are also four rows of four desks facing the front. (Lights up. Trisha walks in from stage left with a backpack slung around her back and sits in a seat at the back of the class. She reaches into her backpack and pulls out a mirror. She bends down the collar of her turtle neck and inspects a large red mark. After a few seconds of inspection, SARAH walks in from stage left) Sarah: Hey Trish, what's up? Trisha suddenly drops the mirror and rolls her turtle neck back up. Trisha: Oh... Hi Sarah! Wh...What's up? Sarah: What's the matter? Did I scare you? Trisha: Oh no no... Just... Looking at my... My hair. Yeah, my hair! That's it. Sarah: (Pauses) Okay. (She sits down next to Trisha) So, what happened last night? You were standing right next to me when the power went out, but when it came back on, you were gone! Trisha: Oh, well you see, I was real tired and wasn't feeling well, so I went home early. Sarah: That's not like you Trish, you never leave a party early. Tell me, what were you really looking at in the mirror? You were looking at your neck, not your hair... Oh my God, is it a hickie?! Trisha: (Anxious) What!? What are you talking about? There's no hickie on my neck! Sarah: Yes there is! I see it! It's right there! (Sarah reaches for Trisha's collar. Before she can get to it, Trisha smacks away her hand) Sarah: Ouch! What'd you do that for!? Trisha: I told you! There's nothing on my neck! Just trust me...Why would I lie to you? Sarah: I know what I saw, Trish. (Sarah sits back and folds her arms, tapping her foot on the ground. There is an awkward pause, then she speaks again) Sarah: So, did you get your homework done? Trisha: Yes... Sarah: Well, what did you put for ten? Trisha: I'm not sure, let me check. (She searches through her backpack) Oh no! I must've lost it on the way here! Sarah: Sure... Just like that hickie just suddenly appeared on your neck, right. (Trisha glares at Sarah) (Lights dim) (As the lights come back on, STUDENTS have filled in the empty chairs. Mr. Jones, the teacher, is sitting at his desk looking over the class) Mr. Jones: Alright class, please pass up your homework for today. (Everyone but Trisha takes out their homework and passes it up to the front. Mr. Jones gets up and collects the papers. He looks at Trisha curiously as he does this) Mr. Jones: Ms. Smith, may I please see your homework? Trisha: Uh, well... No, you can't. Mr. Jones: And just why is that? Trisha: I sort of, well, don't have it. Mr. Jones: And just why is that? Trisha: Heh, that's the thing. You see, something happened... Mr. Jones: And just what was that, Ms. Smith? Trisha: You see, I was working on my homework, at my desk of course. I was almost finished when all of a sudden the power went out. I got scared and knocked my glass of water over and ruined the paper. There was nothing I could do, Mr. Jones, honest! Student 1: Hey Trish, was this before or after the party you went to last night? Trisha: What are you talking about? What party? Student 1: Mark's party. Last night. I could've sworn I saw you there. Mr. Jones: Is this true, Ms. Smith? Trisha: Um... Well, uh... Student 2: Yeah, she was there. I saw her leave with George. A lot of us saw them making out in his car. (The class roars with laughter. Trisha places her face in her hands, embarrassed. She begins to cry) Student 3: Yeah, I saw that! George's back hit the horn a couple of times, and the lights kept blinking. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone in town saw it! (More laughter from the class. Trisha gets angry and jumps up) Trisha: That's not true! I did not! Student 3: Sure you did! We all saw you! It was right there; practically in front of the house! You sure do know how to make an impression, Trish. (Sarah stands up and places her hand on Trisha's back in comfort. Trisha shrugs it off) Trisha: You're such a liar! I wasn't even there! Mr. Jones: That's enough, Ms. Smith. Please control yourself and sit down. Trisha: (Crying, angry) NO! I won't! They're lying about me! (Trisha runs out of the class at stage left) Black out
