Moat Lane Manor

In my little part of hell which is the south east London suburbs there is a little oasis hidden away. The ruins of a moated fortified manor house going back to the time of the Norman conquest set amongst meadows and fields. Its like a time slip from the middle ages tucked away amidst all the 21st C dross. Hard to believe it needed to be fortified with all the peace and quiet there now.

Remember I'm new to poetry, am clueless about rules of punctuation, grammar, verse etc so feedback and tips greatly appreciated.

A suburban gateway

to middle age dreams

rose ragged and replete

from moated depths

With meadows spread

and grey stone buffed

of the harsh lives lived

down to echoed recall

No souls now within

save stout willow arms

and nettled regiments

lick thirsty green tongues

No horde at the walls

but the old plodding horse

frogs by the duckweed

and the lizards basking

So enjoy your peace

Moat Lane Manor

float quiet in dotage

on green silken waters

liked this Phil and from my point of view it seems ok.

it must be nice to find some place nice when living in the noise and bustle of London.

Like this a lot Phil. Stanza three was my favourite.
Nettle tongues licked at my legs a few times when I was a nipper, nasty blighters!!

Best wishes
Steve.

Don't worry about being new and not knowing much. You have written a little gem here Phil. I like it greatly.
If you do want to learn more about the poetry writing craft you could do no better than get a copy of The Craft of Writing Poetry by Alison Chisholm. It is in paperback and quite reasonably priced (£8.99 I think) It tells you just about all you need to know about form, rhyme and style.

Thanks all for being gentle with me.

I will look out for that book Cliff, I'd like to try my hand at it a bit more (the evacuation siren drifts banshee like from the distance). :grin

Some lovely images in here, perhaps they didn't all hang together perfectly, but punctuation would probably help with this. I just stick it in where it belongs - mind, I'm no poet.

Very nice. A very pretty image of the place. And funny how the present day peacefulness contrasts with the medieval days.

Rather a sweet blissful piece. Am pretty new to poetry myself infact I started after the date you wrote this!! I believe in writing as the heart leads to get best performance then tweak as you progress in style - it's your poem so you decide when it's totally finished....Well done - enjoyed it's characteristics!
