Mythical island
By Fledermaus
18 June 2007
A white land sleeps in a dark winter's night
The northern light plays in a starry sky
Mere mortals can sense the great Æsir's might
Born from Ginnungagap, they never die

At the world's end, a green island was made
Made out of molten rock, of ice and snow
Steam rises from Múspellsheimr's hot gate
A collumn of water, where mountains glow

The humble humans herd their sheep and goats
Decendents of adventurous Vikings
Of those who saw this shore from their long boats
Heimdall's children of whom the völva sings

Though I never visited that island
I long for that mythical northern place
For its volcanoes, glaciers and black sand
And most of all its endlessly wide space

Enjoyed this Fledermaus. It has a gentle, lulling pulse that compliments the mysterious nature of the piece. I don't know my norse mythology well enough to get any of your references - not dure if that matters.

I agree with Phil, this has a very gentle nice rhythm to it that suits the mythological subject matter.
A few points about possessive apostrophes- not needed in "volcanoes" or "its" in the last stanza, but needed in stanza 2 for "At the world's end" :)

Thanks Phil and Gutterkitty.
I'll correct the typos. :)

Ginnungagap is the Nordic equivalent of Greek Chaos. I think it literally means something like 'great emptiness'. Múspellsheimr is a world full of fire. And the human race is called 'the children of Heimdall' in the poetic Edda.

Thanks :)
