Something Important

I hope you all like this. A strange twist of fate changes everything. Comments/ suggestions always welcome.

It was a Monday and who is expected to be happy on a day that sounds equally boring too. It is not like a funky Friday, or a spicy Saturday or a relaxed Sunday. David couldn't take it anymore. He didn't know why Ben was so damn happy today. I mean didn't the delivery head just blast us off? Didn't he give us a deadline to complete the project by next week?  Enough was enough.

"Why are you so bloody excited Einstein?" he blurted out.

Ben just looked at him and smiled to himself. This irritated David even more.

"Idiot, you haven't been given a promotion, alright. So either wipe that stupid smile off your face or tell me why are you acting like you've just had your first kiss."

"Nothing man, just relax. I would let you know later," Ben replied, nonchalantly ignoring his best friend's question.

"Fuck you. Fine. Be happy. Enjoy everything by yourself. Don't you dare ask me to share anything either. There was this juicy bit about that hot chick in the sales department and I was going to tell you, but now that you are acting all uptight, you can go and screw yourself."

"Dude, it's nothing," said Ben, while turning his chair toward his computer.

"Oh my god! Man, I never knew you were such a jerk. Now, why the hell would you hide something from me? Am I not your best friend?? Or at least that's what I have been thinking for 6 years, even before Maria came in to your life. And you…you…go to hell." David turned to his PC and started hitting the keys at a mad pace.

"Jackass, of course you're the best friend I've ever had and the special thing I want to tell you needs a special environment. We will be going to "Toonz" in the evening, right? I would let you know then."

"First you take off that fucking smile off your face. It is driving me insane. Ok, ok fine. But promise me you will tell me everything before you get drunk."

"Yeah man, I am already high, I wouldn't need that much beer today."

"Whatever! Ok, enough. I am starting to feel like I am your girlfriend and am asking you to tell me how much you love me. Tch, tch. Shut up and get to work now."

Ben chuckled and got to work. The smile never left his face the entire day.

In the evening.

"Asshole, are you done or what? How long are you going to keep me waiting? I am going to kill you if you don't get your butt off that chair."

"What's the rush? Its not like you have a life anyway? You will just go home, order Chinese and watch TV."

"Shut up alright. I might be bald, fat or I may say a little chubby, but girls still look at me." David started fixing whatever was left of his once thick growth of hair.

"Yeah right, out of pity."

David pounced on him before realizing that that they were still at work. They both rushed out of the parking lot laughing. David's bike was at the mechanic's, so Ben's bike it was for today. Ben always loved pulling David's leg.

"Dude, I have to go meet Maria now, so would you catch a bus or a cab?"

David didn't know what to say for a second. He was amazed at Ben's behavior, because he clearly recollected that they both had plans to go to Toonz and talk about the "important thing" that Ben was going to tell him.

But he didn't ask any questions and told him that he would catch a bus home. Just then Ben burst out laughing.

"I knew you were a dumbfuck all along. How the fuck can I forget that I have to share something really important with you. Now come on, don't stand there like an imbecile and hop on."

"Whatever. Now just drive."

Ben loved it when David made a face and was out of retorts.

"Put on your helmet man. These traffic cops are a real pain in the ass these days. If they catch you, you can easily kiss a few bucks goodbye."

"Shut up you wuss. I am not wearing no helmet man. I will take care. You don't worry about it."

The traffic was crazy and David wasn't able to hear anything Ben was saying on the road.

"What did you say? Can't you be a little louder?"

"Idiot, I said what do want to do after Toonz?"

"Fucker, let's go there first. For all you know, you would never want to get out of there."

"I have something very important to tell you man and also want to ask you a thing."

"What the fuck are you talking about? Why do you want a mask for?"

"Aaahhh, dickhead, I said I want to ask you something?"

"Yeah sure, tell me man."

"Not here. Lets reach the pub first."

"Fucker focus on the road. Don't keep turning your head to talk to me."

"Why, you scared chicken? Pakpakpakpaakaakpapkk."

"WATCH OUT!!!"

Truck. Brakes. Shrieks. Blood. Skid marks. Traffic Jam. Ambulance. Police. Hospital.

David woke up in the hospital room with bandages all over his body. Every portion of his body seemed to be attached to some wire or the other. His eyes were swollen and his head felt heavy. With great difficulty, he asked the whereabouts of Ben. The nurse helped him sit by skewing the key at the bottom of the bed and set it at a 45% angle. When the doctor told him that Ben's head and limbs were badly crushed under the truck and that he was dragged by the vehicle for a good half a kilometer, Ben couldn't even wince. The doctor told him that by the time Ben was bought to the hospital he was already dead. Tears that were flowing down David's face stung him like ants whenever the salty liquid touched a wound. He couldn't move or scream his pain out or throw anything down in anger. The nurse bought him Ben's wallet, a key chain and a few loose papers. He saw something else too in her hands. It was a silver colored, heart shaped, now drenched in blood, wedding invitation.

"Ben Weds Maria" it read, printed in a nice cursive font.

"We both cordially invite you and your family to our wedding at the St.Johns Chapel on July 1st."

Four days. There were just four days left, David kept repeating this in his head. It would take him ages to digest what had just happened. Just when he was about to keep it aside, he noticed a scribble at the end of the page with a P.S. in front of it.

P.S: "And Dude you are my best man. You have no option. I am not asking you I am telling you. And yeah you can bring your mom along, since you have no girlfriend. Hahaha. Just kidding. I love you man.You are the best friend ever."

David held the card to his chest for a long time before the doctors had to give him tranquilizers to put him to sleep.

Hi TT. Gruesome tale. Plenty of lively dialogue to keep this going. However, lack of contractions did make it a little stilted at times.
eg)
Jackass, of course you are the best friend I have ever had.

You've used would instead of will a few times.

Sad story, told to some effect. A little more subtlety needed in the narrative, but nonetheless, an enjoyable piece.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this, but is is still an interesting tale. So did Ben happen to die, or did he get away unscathed?

Keep up your great work!

Thanks Phil. Yeah lemme go through it once more and hopefully that would remove the flaws a lil.

Thanks TW. Ben did not die. I wanted to include that detail, but i thought that would seem like dragging it a lil.

I am confused TT, surely Ben died but you told TW he didn't.
A traffic accident is a bit too deus ex machina to be a satisfying plot twist. Though, I agree, it seemed to be Ben's fault. I assume it was him who wasn't wearing a helmet - it is sometimes hard to know who is talking as you don't tell us.

I thought it was clear in the sense that it was Ben's bike and he was driving. So he would be the turn who would have to turn around in order to speak to David. And yeah it was indeed Ben who wasn't wearing the helmet. Anyway, thanks for your comments Cat.

TT
