some years ago I wrote a book of poems for my children, Ithought I would share a couple of them with you , this being the first
Humphrey sat upon the grass,
he gave a weary yawn,
"I much prefer a sandy dune
to artificial lawn."
"It's not that i'm particular,
or finicky" he said
"but I prefer some nice warm sand,
to curl on for my bed"
"and what a lovely feeling
when sand seeps through my toes,
I'd even suffer sand flies,
that itch and bite my nose"
"i'm not one to complain you know,
well maybe just a bit
the only thing I ask in life
is for a small sand pit !

One or two bits of punctuation missing. Phil. | Humphrey the showroom Camel Written by CliffBowes (176 comments posted) 28th June 2007 | Hello Ms. Helme. I think that your children were very lucky to have a caring mother who wrote such good poetry for them. I like the way this is put together and I'm sure that it would appeal to kids of all ages. Like Phil, I spotted a couple of missing full stops here and there. Cliff | Written by gshelme (152 comments posted) 28th June 2007 | hi, thanks for you comments.I have always struggled with punctuation, and these days, I do rely too much on my computer to correct it for me. Gill | Written by Seagull (174 comments posted) 24th July 2007 | | Like this too; if I was being pernickety (which I'm not, but my wife says I can be) I would suggest you need another syllable in the final line. | Humphrey Written by Josie (2825 comments posted) 15th September 2007 | | So glad that there is another rhyming and rhythmic children's poet on GW. Why did you not post this in the children's section? I don't think you needed another syllable in the final line (unless you have already put it there), but I can comment on the poetry layout as a teacher of typewriting: Capital letters at the start of every line, and indent 3 for the rhyming lines is 100 times more professional. However, I've left the classroom now. ha ha. |
