Election Day
Written by fellpony
28 June 2007
On the day that Mr Brown inherited Number 10, I post this observation from the day his predecessor moved in.

Election Day

The sun shone, and old men
sitting in the park
gave me good day with a smile as I passed.
Young men played with babies
on their front doorsteps
and laughed and said, ”Isn’t it a Beautiful Day?”
Shop assistants chattered happily
and parcelled up my purchases.
Under the cherry blossoms
children, solemn and dressed in kimonos,
held a tea ceremony with their teacher.

I looked at the skeleton of my marriage
and shrugged.  “Life’s too short.
Let’s live it.”  And that was a holiday.

No-one mentioned any politicians.

Life's 'smaller' occurrences are almost always more important than the supposed ground breaking/ground shaking. This puts across a life in context and lived, or about to be lived, with meaning. Politics couldn't be further away from that. (Government and leadership is another thing entirely.)

This has a very peaceful cadence capped with a quizzical finish. Does that make sense?

Enjoyed.

Phil.

I like this style Sue. A little pastiche of Life in a Northern Town - a little moment, caught and kept in aspic.

The melancholic reference to your (then) troubled marriage seems incongruous - but I think that was the effect that you were trying for (?)

Thank you Phil and Oli. I know bits of this are rough!

I haven't posted it before because of two incongruities - the marital reference and the political one; really the idea deserves more work, but I came across the poem in a file and realised it had a sort of ironic connection with the arrival of Mr Brown into Number 10, so I posted it anyway. It may get polished - some time.
