Poetry
Westlands

This was my first attempt at a villanelle. (no, I didn't know what it was either till then)

The place is the West coast of New Zealand.

Wild amazing west coast before the rain came

Everything was so gently still

As clouds rolled forth, a forest to tame.

The palm trees bent in their mighty frames

Ferns crouched beneath their natural sill

Wild amazing west coast before the rain came

Wind cast from Pacific waves of rage

Land can only bow beneath its will

As clouds rolled forth, a forest to tame

Driftwood strewn on the beach, once the frames

Of houses past, a storm to kill.

Wild amazing west coast before the rain came

To see land unspoilt by tourist shame

But to leave it unknown and deny its thrill

As clouds rolled forth, a forest to tame

Then clouds unleashed from heavy strain

The water bursts, a thirsty forest fills

Wild amazing west coast after the rain came

As clouds roll forth, a forest untamed
