My Darwinian Rant

Just that.

The sun rises over Gunna Sound,

revealing a scene of unspeakable beauty.

Turquoise sea, ochre lichen, emerald grass,

wild flowers of every hue imaginable.

Seals wake and yawn at the tide line.

How tempting to think;

God did this for me!

Painted this in six days long ago.

And yet, how arrogant.

This is done for no-one.

No system, no coherence;

Every element has it’s function.

All else is a mirage, a fools notion.

Enjoy a billion years of natural selection,

an astounding myriad of diversity.

But do not give some big, bearded man-in-the-sky credit.

How I laughed at your description of God. Are you sure he isn't a she? The black beard? Is that how he appears in your dreams? What a wonderful picture you paint, Oli. You've just written about the world and its creation, whilst my poem has been about destruction. The natural world is strong and it's beautiful, but we humans mustn't take it for granted because when the earth rebels, how we pay for it! Well done. Enjoyed this very much.

I liked this. I am with Josie, though, what makes you think 'God' is a man?? What about Mother Nature? She is surely more responsible?

Heheh... Whatever makes one happy, not?
If it makes one happy if there's a big bearded man-in-the-sky, who created the world in six days for a fellow named Adam, what's wrong with that?
If it makes one happy if there were a big bang, a huge physical reaction and a lot of lucky coincidences, leading to the developement of the universe as we know it, what's wrong with that?

It just exisists and it's pretty. Who cares were it came from?
Still enjoyable though :)

I don't care where it came from, but I care about where religion can lead us.

Sorry Oli - yours to answer - couldn't resist.

You've actually opened up a new idea here for me. Many who believe in creation stories might think themselves to be humble - bowing down to a greater power etc. Your idea of the arrogance of thinking 'it was all done for me' had never occurred to me. Got me thinking - so success there.

Phil.
