About how the poor areas most of us can afford to live in suddenly become the place to be 20 years later (once we've left!) It was bus passes and battered bicycles and surviving day to day on the cheap Now it's business suits and mobiles and an open top poser jeep
No, things aren't what they used to be 'cos it's Yuppieland now in Battersea
It was overcrowded damp bedsits with cheap posters on crumbling walls Now it's fifty grand fitted studio flats with designer dry rot in their halls
No, things aren't what they used to be 'cos it's Yuppieland now in Battersea
It was a portion of chips from the paper or a few pints with friends you had seen Now it's rip off Beaujolais Nouveau and low fat Nouvelle Cuisine
No, things aren't what they used to be 'cos it's Yuppieland now in Battersea
It was weekends that were crazy and lazy with wild parties and hangovers galore Now Sundays are "Yah, we must get to IKEA to buy those recycled lampshades we saw"
No, things aren't what they used to be 'cos it's Yuppieland now in Battersea
Then you were poor and working class and becoming upwardly mobile was hard Now your old bedsit's a vegan cafe-bar You were just twenty years too avant-garde !

But its better than Written by BrianRobertNeal (1195 comments posted) 2nd August 2005 | Whats happened in Tottenham. Haven't the press invented a new name for them, but a Rose by any name. I enjoyed it immensely and read it several times. Its very lyrical with its chorus and I keep trying to think of a tune to fit to. Thank you for poem. | I live in Brighton, I can sympathise Written by mattm (9 comments posted) 27th September 2005 | It struck me as a good nostaligic lament for a time long ago. The use of concrete objects to convey the two different eras worked really well. I especially liked the idea of "designer dry rot". It's rhythm slowly drew you along with the poem, giving it a nice lyrical air. I would have liked to know more about the people in the two eras, but that's the strenght of the poem - it makes you want to know more about these worlds. Sadly I'm watching Brighton undergo a similar process at the moment. | Written by IPFaulkner (83 comments posted) 1st June 2006 | I'm the kind who loves a poem that ryhmes - I suspect thats a bit naff!! So I really like this. Only critisism is I skipped over the chorus after the second time because I knew it by then and found it a bit uneccesary. Good stuff though IPF | spirit of the times Written by Leo (573 comments posted) 14th June 2006 | nice little read. i'm not bitter that my nans house has trebled in value then! bloody yuppies! keep up the good work |
