ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LANGUAGE

ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LANGUAGE

I was born to an Indonesian mother

And an Indian father

So but obvious

English is not my first language

My mother tongue is BAHASA INDONESIA

And national language is HINDI

And I speak my father’s language BANGLA too

So but obvious

English is not my first language

As a kid, I was taught Bhagvad Gita

So I had to learn SANSKRIT

In school, English was the second language

So but obvious

English is not my first language

As I was growing up

My friends taught me PUNJABI

And I picked up MARATHI

So but obvious

English is not my first language

The multi-diversity Indian culture

Made me to pick up various dialects (of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana & Bihar states)

And I could interact with more people better

So but obvious

English is not my first language

While my parents shifted bases

I picked up URDU, TAMIL, TELUGU and KANNADA

Yes! It was natural for me to pick up languages

So but obvious

English is not my first language

I was fascinated by the language FRENCH

Because of its similarities to Sanskrit

And being musical and sweet like Bangla

So but obvious

English is not my first language

Whenever I have interacted with others

And spoken their languages

First they are surprised, the happy

As languages break the barrier

Between two people and cultures

Each language broadened my horizon

As I gathered knowledge about other cultures

I enjoy, myself interacting with people

So but obvious

English is not my first language

Interacting online

The Filipinos were very sweet

To teach me TAGALOG

So but obvious

English is not my first language

A Spanish-speaking friend

Encouraged me to learn SPANISH

Yes! I am learning the language

So but obvious

English is not my first language

I wonder at times

And so do others

As to how I can speak so many languages

I know pretty well

And so do others interacting with me

There are a few though

Who insists every time

To let me know

What I already know

That English is not my first language

English is just another language

Just like French, Spanish or Bangla

Spoken in different countries of the world

So but obvious my friends

English is not my first language

It is always very difficult to review your work Johnny. As I have said many times, I am in awe of your mastery of different languages. Besides English, I barely get by in French and Greek - and only then if whoever I am speaking with speaks very slowly and does a lot of miming.

Bearing in mind English is not your first Language, the fact you attempt poetry at all in this language shows adventure. That you post your efforts in a public forum is brave.

The fact is, this is a poetry forum, and even though English is not your natural tongue, your work will still be judged against reviewers' poetic tastes and judgements.

While the English in this piece is not perfect, it gets your story across very clearly. As poetry, again, I'm sorry to say, it leaves me cold. I wonder if a factual piece like this might be better written as prose and placed in non-fiction. A well written piece about language should go down well. After all, we're all interested in words here.

To be a jack-of-all-languages is to be a master of none, I suppose, Johnny.

Phil says it all - this is a poetry forum, in which to review poetry for its artistic merit and other intrinsic qualities, not a showcase for linguistic aptitude.

This piece is vitriolic, perhaps understandably. Do you wish reviewers to "make allowances" for the fact that English is only one of your myriad languages? If so, I for one will not be conforming. I make no allowances, for age, race, intellect, native tongue, political/religious convictions...

I just judge the poetry as i see it and "shoot-from-the-hip" - all else is pap. Perhaps you should develop a thicker skin, Johnny?

The idea is nice, and you shaped it a bit like a poem, but if I had to cassify it, it's non-fiction. The content made me curious though. Is that normal, that people in India learn all those languages and dialects? I can understand that they learn English and Hindi, and perhaps Sanskrit (as I guess that has the same status in India as Latin has in Europe), but do many people actually pick up languages like Bangla and Tamil if they don't have to or is that just your fascination with languages?
You're very blessed to live in such a multi-lingual environment...

French is fascinating indeed btw. I had never given it much though until recently, but it's a great mix of Latin, Germanic and even Celtic...
